Looking for any useful tips that will put weight on a hound.
I have a Female Blue Tick that is just 'Skinny'.
Without mentioning any names I will say that we are feeding a 26/18 performance dog food and we free feed this paticular hound to assist her with gaining weight however it has not been doing the job.
100% certain that this is not worms. We have used both Strongid T as well as Ivomec neither of which has helped with the condition.
I have considered the idea of an over active thyroid but thought before having her tested I would consult the experts here on the board.

Has anyone encountered this type of situation in the past and if so how was it delt with?

i had a walker gyp the same way i tried everything she would not put on any weight i feed 22/10 year round and my hounds are nice and slick
i worm my dogs with horse womer cant think of that name but they changed the flavor to green apple it works good and i give them the multi vitamins a-z and have seen great results from this give the vitamins a try and mabey change her food for awhile

I did just recently purchase a bottle of liquid DYNE which is stacked pretty good with the Vit. A-Z so I will go ahead an give this a try.

my black dog is almost the same way. he never gains weight just stays around the same weight. he is a tall hound and stays around the same. i would perfer him about 8-10 lb. heavier. but hes healthy and goes hunting. all i ever use is ivomec. i tried changing brands of dog food but that didnt help.

if you have a little fast food place around close ask them if you can have their used grease out of their deep frier and pour it on your dogs feed, it might take your dog a few days to get used to it but it will put the weight on them.

she is always poor lookin, worm free, and whether I hunt her hard or not, she stays poor.....I go to the local butcher, and I get free beef kidneys, give them a chunk every day, a lil smaller than ur fist, freeze them in freezer, then take a hatchet, or whatever, and give them a chunk.....u gotta work them bout once every 3 weeks if u do, but it will really put weight on them, and really put the pep in them, bout as close to a super drug as I have found....an old man that has runnin dogs had me try it, and it worked on my female.......

My buddy has a female that just can't put on weight. He found PKC feed does the best.

If you do feed "extra" like liver, meat, a little grease just don't overdo it. I like to feed extra's to my dogs too in very small amounts.

One thing I would suggest is to try a couple different feeds.

I'm keeping and working a young dog for a friend. To repay me for helping out he sent me home with a bunch of 26-18 Black Gold (he's a dealer). I feed 26-18 PKC. The dog just would not put on weight, wormed him, etc. I also tried the Black Gold on my females and they lost weight. Fed him the PKC and he put weight on fast.
Try PKC or Diamond. Good luck!

try calf starter---its like dried milk,just add a little to her feed. i have tried the dog bloom products and they do work well also.

A TAPEWORM GO AND GET A GOOD TAPE WORMER,IF THE DOG IS NOT PUTTING ON WEIGHT IT MIGHT BE A TAPE WORM.TAPE WORMS ROBS A DOG OF ALL THAT GOOD 25/20 AND SO ON,BUT TRY THIS FIRST USE THIS FIRST AND REPEAT THE PROCESS ONCE A WEEK UNTIL THE WEIGHT IS BACK.

My female sometimes wont put on weight either. I change her diet to a lower amount of protein and fat for a few weeks and then back. She responds well to this. I dont know why. Another thing you can do is go to a local dairy man and ask if you could have the milk from his freshened cows. The extra fat and vitamin content of that colostrum will put weight on a dog. My bitch actualy gained weight while nursing 13 puppies and my supplimenting her with this kind of milk. It also works WONDERS to get pups to start eating, just dont overdo it.
