Connibears in Minnesota

Just to warn everyone there are still bucket sets still in the woods. Last night I found 3 seperate sets all 3 with 330 connibears. I let the local CO know and he is taking care of it. There were no name tags and as we all know the 330 is illegal on land. These were in the middle of the woods by dens without the land owners permission. With the deep snow there will be forgotten sets still in the woods too. Try to walk some of your spots in the daylight before you cut loose if you haven't been in them for a while. The high pelt prices are gonna bring out the "sportsmen" again. Thanks

No dogs got caught, but awful close. I think they struck the track right by a bucket. I wish I would of had a camera with cuz these were wicked sets.
Jeff, I haven't taken Zip yet, probably wont till Sun. or Mon. night unless Sharon took him tonight, she said she was going. I'm going out here in a little bit for a drop or 2.

Terry,
Has you CO followed up with you at all? Are they seriously pushing to find who is responsible?

I hope the fur market takes a huge hit and we go back to $3-$5 a coon. Hopefully keep the shiners and slobs at home.

The April 11 issue of the Outdoor News, page 23, "Cuffs and Collars" section listed a trapper was caught by CO M Boyum.

Could this be the perpetrator?

I think so, next time I talk to Officer Boyum I'll ask him. He took this real serious when I talked to him. I dont think he likes connibears at all.

Jeff. Zip will tree coons just not a stay put tree dog. Likes to mill alot.

Come on, don't start this crap. In responsable hands these traps are not a danger to dogs. Just because some idiot is not following the rules, don't take it out on the other responsible trappers. If a coon hunter got caught killing a coon out of season should we ban coon hunting with hounds?

If trappers were responsible enough with em it wouldnt b a problem if we tamper with a conibear we get tickets if conibears kill our dogs o well

So are you saying all trapper are not responsible with them, so they should all pay. Never heard of hunter getting a ticket because his hound got killed in a trap.

traps

if i found a trap, on land that was illegal and no tags and it was set, i would set it off with a stick and be done with it. Did you set it off?

crosbycooner, thats exactly what I would do also, and I would take it the next step and take the trap to my local C.O.
If a trap doesn't have a tag on it, it is considered illegal and you can legally remove the trap.

I HAVE HAD A GOOD DOG KILLED IN IRRESPONSIBLY SET TRAPS, but I don't hold it against the responsible trappers. There are irresponsible coon hunters that trespass or hunt close to property they know they cant hunt on knowing there is a good chance the dogs will end up there, but I don't think they should stop hound hunting just because of a few lazy hunters that are to lazy to drive a little farther to property where they don't have to worry about there dogs getting on non-hunting property. Or the hunters that trespasser just cause they are to lazy to go and ask permission. I don't think it would be rite to hold it against the legal hunters do you?? I agree, if there is any chance at all of accidentally catching a hound the trapper should opt for a more hound friendly set, but it's not always going to be a responsible trapper making the set, just like it's not always going to be the responsible hunter that drives by posted property.

Your rite, I'm wrong. They SHOULD outlaw conibear trapping, cause there are a few bad trappers out there, but hell they should go ahead and out law hound hunting to cause there are some bad hound hunters out there that trespass and cut fences also. Wouldn't you agree. I'm glad you made me see the light. Thanks
My new motto is sportsmen against sportsmen, that should about do it.
