I don't think it would be too hard.
Just teach them to come when called when they're young , then take them to the woods and let them roam. Give them time to get out of sight , then honk the horn and call them. They'll catch on I'm sure.

All of my hounds do it... It is awesome...

jackbob pretty much summed it up.. Just turn them loose, let them get out, call them, honk the horn... Let them know how good they are when they come back.. Voila... It is nice cat hunting some time when it is freezing cold out, you are not getting anything accomplished by cold trailing and you want your dog back.. Just sit in your nice and warm truck and honk them back in

You use it big game hunting a lot... And is sure makes you mad if you are hunting with some guy who's dogs won't come into the horn... I guess coon hunting it probably would not serve much purpose...

ive never used a horn but every dog i have ever owned would come when i call them. people say "you dont want them to leave the tree" well if im calling them back to me its for a reason. im sure a horn would work i just call to them every time i go to feed and dont expect it to work right away its easier for pups to learn than big dogs i can imagine it would take them a while.

horn

I don't use the horn but I do use a good strong referee type metal whistle. Started out when they came anywhere near me I would blow it and pet them up, feeding time would work well to. Now they have been up to 1 mile away, I blow the whistle and I have seen them turn and come right in when I am watching them on the GPS. Saves a lot of trouble when they are in a light coon area like ours and they arent struck or when they get on property that is posted.

I can call my old dog off the tree and he will follow me to the truck. My young dog is a work in progress. My sons do too. He comp hunts and the guys in his cast marvel when he does it and they have to drag their dogs off the tree. Hounds are smarter than they get credit for being.

The only bad thing about calling them in with a carn horn is what happens when one dog gets near a road and somebody honks a horn at it? You call all of your dogs right into trouble.....

We all wish we could call our dogs in , In 35 yrs of hunting there have been many times I would have blown the horn had them come if they would have. Some of us coonhunters are to proud to try something new, as I get older, back hurts more those 2mile walks in the swamp dont turn me on anymore. JMO MIKE

In some places... like around where I live, you almost HAVE to have a dog that comes back in... unless you want your dog to get you or itself in some deep doo doo.

I don't know about other parts of the country, but around here, the woods are so big and thick if they got out over a mountain top and into the next... you may as well start looking for them the following week along a road or something because it would take you days to walk to them. Also, you have to contend with roads, railroad tracks, and people who will not hesitate to shoot you or your dogs if you're caught on their ground.

Around these parts, the hunting is a little different and you do not necessarily have the luxury of "driving around to the dogs". It just doesn't happen like that.

If you don't believe me, then come out for a hunt with your dog that "never comes back"... you better book your room for the week.

Most would know the horn and the truck, i had a walker dog, you could call honk what ever but he knew my truck and he knew my horn, most of the time he would just wait in the bushes till i called him, and he would come out to me

cayton, time to find somebody young to hunt with!! for the others, get a stay put tree dog. No reason a dog should have to run for a week to tree a coon, not anywhere in the us.s

Not all of us coon hunt here...

And you bet I want to be able to call a dog off of something.. It's not just a go and honk your horn once and everyone packs it in.. It is most of the time a long drawn out process getting them back in to the horn. But they will come into it.. It is not going to be just some strange car honking to pull them off..

Funny how different parts of the country and even chasing game can give you a different outlook on something..

I don't want and have never hunted with a dog where you can just call them once or honk once and back they come. But if I am doing it repeatedly then I have a good reason to and they have better listen to me.. Any dog who won't handle in any aspect I want it to won't stay here long.. Just how some people think that a deer chasing dog is the end of the world LOL

Obedience is something that ALL dogs can and should be taught. Whether coming to a horn, whistle or just saying "come", it does'nt matter. This command won't make them leave trees or anything like that. For the most part they either have that or they don't. Having a dog that comes when you call it is not just handy when it's time to go home but eliminates the need to crawl into brush piles, holes, tiles etc. Of course the dog has to be able to hear you to respond to any of them.
Any dog can be trained to "heel" also, which means you don't need a leash. Very handy in thick timbers and corn fields, or when hunting alone with 2 or 3 dogs. And it's really not to difficult to do,
Now, if we could only make em' hunt harder or have a better nose or mouth we'd be in business.

exactly why i don't post on here. ghostcoon your more than welcome to come watch my yote hounds anytime you would like. i'll show ya how a SMART dog is suppose to handle. not saying my stuff is the best, but for you to tell me what kinda dogs i have is ridiculous. and yes i am the son who has the non hunting yote hounds that you speak of. i don't have any use for a hound that will not obey me when i want it to come to me. what's the use of that. i know everyone has their own opinion about things as i see you have your own opinion of my yote hounds that you know nothing about. my dad will back me on this one, it can be the best track running fastest dog in the country, but if it doesn't mind me it will be sent down the road to people like you who like it when their dogs don't mind....

"Honestly if your sons HARD HUNTING yote dogs come back to a horn honking there not a mile away and there not really hunting. The only time i wanna see my dog is if its treed. Coming back to the truck for him isnt an option"

Do you yote hunt or not?..prolly not..I don't know why you wouldnt want your dogs to come to horn when you want them to come in.Most of the time when you are runnin wolf dogs you find the track to put them on.. not like coonhunting when you cast your dogs into the woods..so if you have no tracks going and you want your dogs to come out to you and move somewhere else honking your horn works great.so don't go knocking the guys dogs that you don't know anything about.
