thank you all......
for all your prayers and concerns. Here is what happened and how we stand as of today......
I took Carl to ER for what we thought was a bad case of the stomach flu..turns out it was appendicitits.....they performed and emergency appendectomy. Surgeon came out and let me know that everything went well with procedure and that they were getting him ready to move him to recovery room. While they were extubating him (removing tubes in throat placed for surgery) he started to wake up and started struggling. They think he aspirated (vomited) and that the fluid went down into his lungs, which in turn caused him to stop breathing. For whatever reason ( i'm still not clear on details yet), they could not get an airway open in time and his heart stopped. They performed CPR for 18 min before his heart started beating again. (it only takes 3 min of down time for brain damage to occur).....they moved him to ICU at the local hosp (Alliance, Oh) they worked on him all day. He was having seizures and was unresponsive. The hosp suggested that we move him to a more progressive facility. They life-flighted him to Pittsburg, Pa. We spent 12 days there. 3 CAT scans showed no signs of stroke or bleeding in the brain. EEG shows slowing of brain activity in all areas. WE moved him back to a different hosp close to home (Aultman Hosp in Canton, Oh) in their long-term-care facility. They say that it won't get worse, but they can't say if or how much improvement he will make. It's all just been a day by day situation and thats what it's going to be from here on out......he is on a ventilator but only for part of the day....they are slowly weaning him off, cause he can breathe on his own, just don't want to push too far too fast. He opens eyes and looks around, but with no real focus on any one thing. At least most of the time. At times I can see that he repsonds to my voice and touch but its sporadic. He can't consciously move arms or legs, but does have good reflexes and he twiches and has spasms at times. It's all just a wait and see thing from here on out.......
again thanks to all for your thoughts and prayers...i think we are going to need them.
