there have been no "scientifically" confirmed sightings, but plenty of people have reported seeing them.

YES....THERE ARE MOUNTAIN LIONS IN NC. THERE ARE GOLD PHASE AND ALSO BLACK PHASE, MORE COMMONLY KNOWN AS A PANTHER.

THE REASON WHY THEY ARE NOT RECOGNIZED AS BEING "NATIVE" TO NC, IS BECAUSE NO ONE HAS BEEN ABLE TO KILL ONE IN NC TO CONFIRM THAT THEY ARE ACTUALLY RESIDING HERE. BECAUSE SO FEW KNOW THERE ARE NOT ALOT OF CAT HUNTERS AROUND HERE.

WE HAVE SEEN SEVERAL. AND LET ME TELL YOU, THEY ARE GEORGEOUS.

THE ONE WE SAW UP CLOSE WAS A BLACK PHASE, AND THEY ARE MORE GEORGEOUS IN REAL LIFE THAN IN THE PICTURES.

THEY DO LOOK RIGHT THROUGH YOU WHEN THEY LOOK AT YOU, IT GIVES YOU AN ERIE CALM/SCARED OUT OF YOUR WITS FEELING.

My Mom and I seen a big black cat around in 1986 one morning running a fence line on our farm. With the fence
post being there it help us judge the size of the cat. It was about 3ft from head to butt and over 2 ft tall.
About 20 years later I meet a man that has bear and coon hunted for years and lives any about 7 miles from me. Over the time I know him he told me stories about his bear hunting in the western and eastern parts of the state and coon hunting around here. One day he told me about a big black cat he seen on his farm. That same day another farmer seen it and called my friend. They could not believe they both seen the same thing, a big black cat working its way down a creek that went though there farms.
My friend call up some houndsmen ( both coon and bear hunters ) They put a pack of hounds together and went down the creek. They hunted the rest of that day and most of the night with no luck.
I couldn't believe the story he just told me. I said that really happened. He said he didn't care if I believe him are not it happen. I asked how long ago was it. He said around 1985 or 1986.

A guy killed a black panther (the animal, not the militant political group) while deer hunting in SC back in the '80's and rode it around in the back of his truck showing it off. The DNR caught wind and gave him a huge fine, took his truck, and took his hunting license for life. He was allowed to buy his truck back from them.

same thing happened with a bear iin KY.

The guy claimed that it was self defense, but I don't think the DNR people bought off on it. Of course there aren't any bears here officially, don't you just love how that works?? They aren't here, but you better not shoot one of those non-existent critters, and yes we have the cougars too (off the record of course)

I'm skeert to say I have seen a black one! CoonDawg ya know! J/K

My wife has seen the light phase too but I didn't see that one. There was an article written in a little local newpaper about that. Several reputable people here had seen them over the years according to the reporter including himself, but as with others no one had provided the cold hard evidence -- a dead animal. So the conclusion was -- they do not exist!

no evidence? what about the ones that were killed and the people got in trouble? anyway, how can you get in trouble (fined) for killing something that does not exist?? those folks could probably fought that one.

I have pics of a Mtn Lion in NC and SC. The one in NC was taken by a retired lady up above Clyde. She sent them via email and the dates where daily for 4 days. She just thought I would be interested in seeing them. Some in the day but mostly at night. The ones in SC where taken in the Mtns of Greenville county, on my inlaws farm. Who's looking for proof??? They aren't looking too good. These where all taken this past year. If anyone wants to see send me an email and I'll forward some over to ya. highstylnrage@yahoo.com

I live in the Pee Dee region of South Carolina. I have seen both. A black one back in the winter of 93 and another black on last week. The one I saw last week was within the city limits of Darlington. It was right across the road from the race track. The mountain lion I saw was about 3 years ago crossing Interstate 20.

They are here but I hope not to stay.

Supposedly ther is a black phase here in Wilkesboro, Several people have claimed to see it while deer hunting and one of our friends said they treed it one night. I believe them......I was told there weren't any black bears in Wilkes County..........well, what do ya say to the 80lb one I saw last deer season. I believe saw a young black phase cub this year. I threw up my scope b/c I thought is was a LARGE, dark, bobcat, but to my suprise it had a long tail!! That is all I got a glims of .....the hind quater.
