I wound up hunting last night with a guy that I have never hunted with before, nice enough guy, buy in a way really odd in my opinion. He was hunting a Black & Tan that will flat get through the country and get tree'd with a a real live racoon over it's head. When I asked him if he competition hunted, he just laughed and said "until recently yes, but I think it's time to just enjoy the dogs for what they are". According to him, it is his opinion that the competition game has gotten out of hand as far as the rules go, and he's just too stubborn and set in his ways to play anymore. When I asked about UKC and the hunts, he said go for it and enjoy it all you can but read the rules and make sure that you understand them clearly. When I asked when he'd be back hunting them, he just chuckled and said something about a really hot place getting chilly. I thought that was very odd for someone to tell me to hunt the hunts with UKC when he says that he won't himself so I asked if he was setting me up? His answer was that all people have choices to make in life and we should all make our own and stick with it. I guess there' a little bit of wisdom in that, and sometime I'll get him to tell me what happened to drive him away from UKC, for right now, all he would say is that it's his business, not mine, shut up and listen to the dogs tree.

Nothing wrong with that...........if a man no longer enjoys it, then a man makes a decision on what he wants to do. Sounds like he enjoys running hounds but has gotten tired of the comp. game of it.

There has been many pro athletes who have walked away from their sport or retired because they no longer enjoyed it.

Comp. hunting is not for everyone.........if there is as many whiners and crybabies in some clubs as you see on this forum, I can understand why some no longer enjoy it.

True....also, for the mostpart the nite hunts are very enjoyable.
Hunting/non-hunting judges should know the rules inside out.Should also be men/women of integrity,not partake in buddy systems and NEVER be afraid of doing the right thing.

I feel the most important ingredient on any night cast is for the judge to let the cast know he knows hounds,people,rules and how to be a respectful human. Call your hounds like it is or the judge will do it for you. If there are any discrepentcies, question the card,sign it, and go before moh. Lets have a enjoyable night of treeing coons and look forward to hunting with one another again.

the more i read about this comp hunting the more i think i should shy away from it i have never done it but over the past couple weeks all i have read has been kinda discourageing. win lose or draw hold ya head up and be proud of what ya got not what ya coulda or think ya shoulda had lifes to short to waste on one bad nite or hunt or what ever it may be.

Ill most likely try it mainly waiting for my dad to retire he got me into coon hunting an wouldnt be right without him for now just pleasure hunt.

While I can see and understand what you mean, I don't quite understand why it needs to be that way out there in the first place. Dang, are the rules so messed up that we need a lawyer out there with us to interpret them. I have read over them pretty thoroughly and they don't seem that bad to me, and yet when I get on here and read there is always somebody talking about how the rules are being mis-interpreted. If they are that bad,we need to get them ironed out once and for all, don't we? I know that there are plenty of people out there who can talk to the Breed reps and say "houston we have a problem" . The breed rep's should be able to use E-mail to talk to their counter parts and get the rules fixed, then all UKC has to do is print it out in the Blood Lines Magazine and say this is how it is till the book get changed. If that happened then, people like the guy that I was talking about wouldn't be bent out of shape over something that happened over a mis worded rule that should have been fixed a long time ago because everyone knows it's wrong. But I digress, My original point with this message was that I understand why someone will occasionally have to plant both feet and stand on principle, whats right is right, but at what cost? In this case there is a Nt. Ch. dog that will never be able to advance as it should because it's owner is admittedly too bull headed to accept what he feels is the wrong answer and just let it go. There are too many hunts out there for me be like that, or maybe I'm just too easy.

I don't know why folks are always so surprised at people being mean and such at those things.... if you think about it they are competition hunts... since the dogs have no idea they're in competition, guess who is gonna' be competitive????- the people. When folks are competitive they won't be rosy and rainbows. If you want to just have fun, call up a couple friends and have a fun hunt. Comp. hunts are primarily about winning to make the owner feel good. Folks can argue about that, but the reality that's what it's about. If you don't think so, what do you think would happen if PKC and UKC one day said all their hunts would be for fun and fellowship, no winners would be crowned and no points given???? Think many would show up for those????That doesn't make it bad, but know what it is and don't be surprised that people are competitive at a competition event.

I have been involved with several different sports throughout my life, and yes the contestants always want to win. I have no problem with an honest competitor beating me in the spirit of fair play anytime at all. I think what some of the people who have responded to this thread are talking about is the ones who don't. I have read several of the things on here where people are arguing back and forth about the rules, I even read where someone said "mite be what it means, but this is what it says", now come on people, if thats what this is all about then we all need to get a life!. I was initially told that UKC would be the best place for me to start out in the competition hunts, but if it's that bad then I may not start at all. " UKC hunts are kinda like a pleasure hunt with a scorecard, a lot of fun hunting with new people every week" thats what I was told, from the sound of what some people on here have to say, I don't want to hunt with them anytime.

I'm not suprised at people being mean,selfish,wanting to win no matter what etc...that's why everyone on a nite cast should be people of integrity, know the rules, be respectful and lead by example.
The general idea is to be competitive by following the rules.If for some reason an idividual doesn't agree with a decision on the cast..question the card and go before moh.All kc's hunts can be and are a lot of fun for the most-part. It's not ukc,pkc,akc's fault some nite cast are a bad experience. I understand there are bad cast....always will be, because as was said earlier, there are people in this world who are pitifully pathetic who want to win at all cost. The cleanup of these things begin at the clubhouse with the officers being people of mental compitence to do their very best to assure that decision making people such as judges,guides,moh and EVERYTHING else to do with the competition hunts the particular club host is the very best it can be.

If you're not having fun in the nite hunts? I'd first take a look at myself. Secondly I would look at the club I'm hunting.

If I get all that right, I think "ditto" is in order here about the rules needing to followed. Now are you talking about what they MEAN or SAY, and where do "YOU" draw the line?

If you believe in your heart, and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that "YOU" are right in your mind, how far will you go to prove it? Are you willing to accept that it's wrong and just go on (like me) or plant your feet and say "it ends here!" like the other person that I know?

If people would let the dog win the hunt rather than themselves doing it it would be more enjoyable.When handlers only get paid to hunt a dog if they win it gets bad.Greed hurts the sport.
