I'm from charleston and a buddy of mine just sold 62 coon's to Groenewold..for $13.86 average couldn't have been happier [freezer coon].I alway's call and talk to them and see what they are paying..I don't know what kind of coon's your buddy had but bigger dosen't allway's mean better...go to thier website see where they are going to be in your area and go talk to them..The only problem I have with them is when their buyer's are at their stop's and they have a bunch of fur to go through they don't want to slow and bargain.they know what they are told to pay and they have many more stop's to make.time issue's...www.gfwco.com

The first bunch of hides I sold i averaged 17.71, the second bunch I averaged 22.10. I seen hides brought in when I sold I wouldn't give fifty cents for. They looked like they had been dragged there behind a truck. I live in Minn. and the hides bring a premium price, but it don't make a lot of sense to shoot coon and then not take care of the hides. Some of the complaining about hide prices can be attributed to the lack of care they got before they got to the buyers. Comb em out and freeze em flat and see if ya don't do a little better.

I have froze mine flat for years now .When I put the hide in the freezer it's been washed, dry and combed.frozen flat they thaw quicker and you dont have to comb them any more .Just grap them by the nose and flip them like snapping a towel and go sell

And another thing, shoot em in the head and don't let your dogs chew em full of holes. If you can't hit their head get a better gun and teach your dog to grab by the throat and finish the deal if he has to.

I dont know if you have ever sold to groenwold but i believe that what Rex had to say about time issues has a lot to do with it....Groenwold goes very very quickly and honestly i dont believe he looks the pelts over much if any at all!! he just grabs them and puts them in a couple piles...he can sort through about 30 pelts in only a couple mins! Myself and a couple guys I know averaged $8-$9 from Groenwold and that was skinned...other people claim to be averaging quiet a bit more selling to him, but that was the going rate here in central illinois.

GRNT. You got what is the going rate...$8.oo or $9.00 is up from last years price on skinned coon's and that's what the buyer's have been saying all year.I have heard higher average's but have also heard lower....I still got mine and wont sell till after the first auction in Jan...you may have been smart selling early you never know they may go up or down??????

i may stay in the same boat as you rex. i have my freezer little over half full. so i still have room. i may wait and like you said see how prices go after jan. if they go down, i doubt it will go down much more than it is now and if it stays the same well i didnt loose anything.. i have been told from a guy that goes to the auctions in canada that coon and yote hide should be going up soon because the demand is getting to be more and more in other countries.whether he knew what he was talking about or not i dont know. but again its all a gambling game.

You are right Rex, they are up from last year but not much at all....Last year selling to groenwold I averaged $7-$8 this year it is about a dollar more on average as it seems...who knows maybe it will still go up? I dont hunt to kill 200 coons a year but i do kill a few and it helps to pay for gas and dog food, but when I hear people that have dogs that tree 200 coons a season I just laugh and don't pay much attention to them..Illinois season is from nov-feb so your looking at around 90 days or so and to reach 200 coons you must kill over 2 coons a night 7 days a week all throughout kill season...Now I know Illinois doesnt have as bad of winters as MN or WI and the Dakotas, but we still have snow/ice/wind/and freezing temperatures...and I know most people layup when the conditions are not tollerable (so that means you miss a day or days of hunting meaning you better be killing more coons a night to compensate).....We do have a good population of coons but I know my dogs are not the best dogs in the country or state for that matter, but I dont see why my hounds are not as good as the next mans and I know I dont tree 200 coons in 90 days and that 90 days being the worst weather of the year.

GRNT.. that is a hard average to hold .I know My hound and I are not going to average 2 coon a night for 90 night's..I shoot one coon out of each tree, I don't care if there's a dozen up there he get's one ...that's all he need's...After that Jan. auction ,that pretty well tell's the tail .I hold mine till toward's the end because you might get a few good night's in Jan. ...then I don't have to make 2 trip's and the second trip you usely don't have many...Last year it was muskrat's ..prices through the roof [I got $7.00 average]this year coon and yotes are up .next year who know's ..but those buyer's put the word out that this artical of fur will be up and that get's people out there harvesting fur so they win all around....

Yeah thats right Rex, another thing that kinda torques me is when i go to sell a few hides i find some shiners or trappers with a truck load of coon!!! people that shine really put a bad taste in my mouth...I don't have a problem with trappers at all I would just rather they trap everything but coons...i have a few hunting spots i dont hunt this time of year b/c of ppl that trap and i dont want myself or my dogs to stumble onto one while coon hunting at night.....Sorry for going off topic on this gentlemens thread, but maybe less shinners and coon trappers we may see a better price on coons??

i agree with the above post. but those people will never cange. we will have that problem for ever just like we always have. i just find properties that i know dont have anyone hunting/traping them but me. i do have some other spots north of me that i hunt in the off season just because i know people are in their trapping.

Unfortanatley you guy's are right on the shinner's they are going to be with us no matter what..I'v coonhunted and trapped for 40+ year's and I think everyone should be able to get out there and do what they enjoy.I don't take trapped coon's I release all my coon's if I catch one accidently..I seen on a nother thread where a man got his good dog killed in a 220...If the trapper that made this set done it illeagly have him arreseted.if he was trespassing or his trap was illeagle throw the book at him..These trapper's that want to use the 220 in the bucket set should have to set it 10feet above the ground or 3/4 semerged in water and that would elimanate these tragic inccedent's.My self I would never make the bucket set, to many bad thing's could happen..The problem with outlawing the trap is the anti's are the only one's benifiting from it .they want to devide us.. hunter's aginst trapper.. trapper's aginst hunter's ..when we should all stand togather to keep our right's to hunt and trap.See if you go down their road there is no end to it..if they get the trap outlawed then they may turn their wrath upon the hunter next ..like say ...the anti's think it is a unfair chase to use your light coonhunting at night... let's outlaw the light at night for coonhunting...you can see exactly where they are headed with this ...stop hunting and trapping forever...I'm not willing to do that...
