Two weeks ago I put a coon out on my 4 year old female and it wasn't hit real good. It was a big boar coon and it bit her through the ear, on the muzzle, and above and below her right eye. I managed to get her ear to quit bleeding and doctored her with turpentine. The dogs eye has looked fine since the beginning but today I noticed that above her eye it is swollen and puffy like it is full of infection. To give you a visual picture of what it looks like, imagine Rocky when he asked Mick to cut him.I don't know why it is just now showing up after two weeks but it is. I have been hunting hard and she is in good hunting shape, just borderline looking thin. This infection has caused her to drop some weight and today her hip bones are more pronounced and she looks thinner. I gave her 1cc of Penicillen and plan to give the same for 3 more days. My question is do you feel like this is the right thing to do or would you take her to the vet since it is close to her eye? Any suggestions from knowledgeable houndsmen/ houndswomen would be appreciated.

I would take her to the vet. They will probably put her on a longer term antibiotic treatment. Make sure you run the full course they prescribe.

i would take her to the vet if it gets real bad it may cause eye problems infection can do some damage to an eye if left alone

If you have to ask if you should take the dog to the vet...then you should have already taken the dog to the vet hours ago!

Turpentine? There is no medical value to treating anything but dirty paint brushes with turpentine.

Penicilin? 1 cc of penicilin for 4 days? Are you trying to make the infection antibiotic resistant?? Try 10 days, and 2cc. Do you know for a fact that this is even bacterial and not viral? Maybe neither. I dont mean to pick on you but cmon...just go to the vet!

First of all I don't understand your hostility toward me or my hound when you odviously don't know anything about either one of us. But if you insist on trying to ruffle someones feathers you might as well have at er because you don't bother me. Secondly, it says on the label of the Penicillin I bought today to give 1 ml per 100 lbs. of body weight intramuscularly and to give it up to a max. of 4 days. My dog does not weigh 100 lbs. so I figured 1 ml. would definitely cover it. I am not a vet nor do I claim to be one. I simply asked for FRIENDLY advice from those who are much more knowledgeable than me about doctoring dogs. Thirdly, if I can save a $300 vet bill with a $9.99 bottle of Penicillin, especially this close to Christmas, I'd be crazy not to do it. And lastly, Terpuntine is effective in fighting infection and has been used by my family and I for years when we castrate hogs with no problems. Don't beleive it? Ask some ole timers.

There are several good treatments for wounds. One I've had good luck with is hydrogen peroxide. It's dirt cheap and works really well. Good luck getting your dog back in health.

Just curious as to whether the swelling around her eye is very tight, warm/hot to the touch, or not. My experience is that it is a bacterial infection that causes the heat and tightness but they are also easier to treat than viral. But I would suggest that you take her to the vet for long term, stronger antibiotics and just to be on the safe side with an infection around the eye is damage to the eye and it is close enough to migrate into the brain and cause damage there as well and it's just not worth the chance

Sorry, I wasn't meaning to pick on you like i said..but seriously...if more people would stop asking on a message board, and just get to the vet already. That ruffles my feathers! And it makes us look dumb, and inhumane....and believe me the anti's are watching every post on here. We all need to preserve our image as caring dog owners who take great care of our animals (not saying you do or dont).

I hope your dog is ok, but there's no reason it would cost $300 for what you describe. Waiting can certainly lead to a much more expensive bill!

Turpentine on cuts? Yeah I know...have heard of it. Peroxide is cheaper, and alot more effective. I've heard of old motor oil for fleas....deisel fuel for ticks, and rolling your hound down a hill in a barrel filled with rocks and a deer hide to stop trash running. Allot of old ways are not the best ways and you can bet I wont be doing any of that stuff anytime soon. Go to the vet, I hope your dogs eye is better soon!

but i have heard the old man say you could dr. a dog
on pen. for infection.b-12 to make them eat.

Try a warm pack around the swollen area. sounds like the beginning of an abcess. once you have the pack on for a while see if you can reopen the bite wound and express the puss from the wound. keep some gauze or clean rags on hand to contain the mess don't let it leak into the eye. once you get all the stuff out take a syringe and flush with some dilute iodine. do this for a couple of days and it should heal up just fine. I have had to lance(cut open) these type of wounds before to get the puss out. just be careful around the eye area!!!

when ever my hound gets bit, i wash the area with hydrogen peroxide, and cover it with neosporin, it helps fight off bacteria, and lets the wound heal quicker, just like on a person.

hope your dog is getting better, i would take it to the vet just to make sure that it isnt anything more serious

Just took mine into the vet for the same thing except his is under his neck. Didn't notice it right away and the absess got big and busted open oozing stinky puzz. Now he has a hole the size of a tennis ball under his neck. Its the ugliest thing I've seen. Vet said to keep flushing it with a mixture of iodine and water and onnly use peroxide once. Peroxide will dry the wound out. they don't even recommend using it all anymore. Not what I was used to hearing but thats what I was told.

Well I finally decided to just go ahead and take her to the vet and here is what they had to say. Penicillin, it turns out would not help this dog because the bacteria that apparantly lives in a coons mouth is not the same bacteria that would cause an infection from barbed wire or something like that. So for $86 bucks, they gave me an antibiotic, a pain killer, and an ointment to put directly into her eye and said if it don't get better they want to sedate her and lance it. Personally, I didn't see the need to sedate her as she stood there calmly while the vet squeezed around on the abcess. So if it comes down to that I'll probably just do it myself. I want to thank every body for their advice and hopefully she'll get over it soon. Lesson learned.

if nothing else try a broadband antibiotic like exenol or polyflex dogs like cows over the years have began to build a tolerance to reg. penicilin good luck long time dairy farmer

it dont really matter how much pinicilin you give her you cant od her on it... has she had a rabies vac... if not to late now.. not saying she has got it ... me personally i would give her 3 to 4 ccs... for 4 days... take that cut over her eye lance it and mash out the infection and put some alcohal on it... and antibiotic cream... and give he alittle bread ... believe it orr not it will put some weight on her with a little grease if you want... some ivomec would be nice to ...... but all in all take her to a vet but if you dont' have the money to do this it will help... is she quites eating she will dehidrate keep fluid down her... .. i have had the same thang hapen to mine and i did this it helps... just a bit of advice.. take her to the vet and find out wat to do.get some meicine. and take her back home cause believe me the vet ain't gonna take care of your hound bette than you are he is not gonna stay there and watch her like you will... she could get bad over night and knowone will be there..... keep a close eye on here

I would flush the wound out with warm soapy water and the just cover thick with bag balm til you can get her to the vet. The bag balm is a lotion with the propper atibiotics in it that will help keep the infection from getting worse. bag balm is in a green squar tin can with red lettering on it. It can be found at your local wal-mart , drug store , feed mill just ask a employee and you will get what you want. bag balm is a lotion that dairy farmers use on cow utters after every milking to fight against iffection when a cow has scratched utter's or scraps on thier utters it has antibiotics in it to kill infection. I had a cat that got ear mights that ate through the base of one of it's ears and I flushed it twice a day with warm soapy water and just caked the bag balm on for a week and the skin started to grow back with new hair. Nurseing homes use it to for bed soars on the nurseing home patients , it's good for bald spots , srapes , hot spots , box soars , wounds. It does the trick until the vet can check the animal out. It sounds like you need to make a trip to the vet since it went so long but the bag balm will keep it from get worse. I would recommend getting some anyways so in the future you can flush wounds with warm water and treat with bag balm right away.
