handler or trainer who finished it

One man trains a dog from 8 weaks to a finished dog that can win in most comp.

Another man takes this dog and hunts it in comps. till it is GRNCH.
Who in your opinion finished the dog?

I would say it was a finished hound before it ever entered a hunt. What do yawl say?

I would think if the trainer done his job and the dog doesn't need any problem solving between hunts. He is allready getting hunted 2-3 nights a weak at hunts. I wouldn't want to add too much hunting to that. It would depend on the drive and condition of the dog but I would just add enough hunting to keep it in good physical condition. If it was real hyper I might keep it ran down enough it didn't make mistakes from trying to do things to fast or some get to eager and seatle for a possom.

The trainer does have a lot more time in on a dog and has to know a lot more about the training part of handeling a dog.
I would sure rather train than travel all the time and put up with some of the things in the hunts though. Knowing all the rules and handeling all the other hunters. I will take the dogs every time. I love to hunt in comp. every now and then but for a liveing (nope). Be glad when I get one ready to go though so I can when I want.

I agree with "hjames".

The guy who TRAINED the dog, certianly did the HARD WORK, but the HANDLER & OR OWNER get probably over 95% of the credit. IMO, it should be the other way around?????????????

What it usually amounts too, is if you have the MONEY, you can buy a dog that is a TOP 20, dog in UKC or a SEMI-FINALIST in PKC. & more than likely you'll never hear who TRAINED IT.

There have been a couple of dogs on here, that were winning alot with certian HANDLERS & when that HANDLER moved on to a different dog, you hardly ever hear about that dog winning much after that????????????????????

Yea the trainer isn't going to get any credit for training it for sure. Unless you train them and have the money to hire a pro handler to comp. them for you.

If your looking for credit, then do it all yourself.

This is exactly why I am 100% infavor of the P.P.
As a breeder/trainer/"finisher".
I will get 100% of the dogs credit($)
I own the Stud X I own the Dam = Current Competitor.

Theres' nothing that I am aware of that says' you can't DO IT ALL.

I guess a person could put a show ch on them so they couldn't change there name. That way if some one wanted a well trained dog they would know who trained what. I don't know if the big money guys would buy one they couldn't put there kennel name on or not.
I am not a big trainer but if I was I would want to be able to advertise one way or the other. If you can't prove the dogs you trained how would you advertise in a buisness were everyones so SUCH GOOD TRAINERS?

No if you want to do it all and can afford to take off and run around from hunt to hunt. I enjoy training pups and I enjoy some comp. BUT I don't think I would like comp. enough to do it all the time. That becomes a putting up with rude people rather than about dogs. I just quet one dog profession becouse of that. This one is going to stay fun.
I just bought a pup out of Extreme Insane X -------- love the pup so far. Only 5 weaks old though.

Your wrong.
I do it all.I don't take off, can't afford to, and I don't run around from hunt to hunt.
I pick and choose which hunts I enter. I average 6 maybe 8 hunts a year. Usually the larger ones.
In between those hunts I'm training the dog(s).
You don't have to be at every hunt every weekend, to finish a dog, but you do have to hunt them outside the hunts to prepare them for competition.
How much time you invest in their training will translate into how much time you spend going from "hunt to hunt".
I like to keep that at a minimun.

I'd say the trainer finished the dog into a coondog , and the comp hunter finished him to GrNt.
They should both get credit.
