ed is as knowledgable breeder as there is and more hands on than 99% of them. basically he is going to get the type of dogs he is looking for.
what is he looking for? well imo, he hunts up north in extremly thick coon and he wants to win the big ukc hunts-which takes extremely high scores. now what type of dog does that lead you to?
quick to open borderline mouthy, quick locators, hot nosed, dont mind packing, stay put, easy to call treed dogs. all these boys calling out jet 8, i bet he would beat their eyes out in thick coons. thin coon, where one really has to go find one, work a track and be able to have the meat, i think there are better options.
some like jv, says ed deliberately went out and added the uchtman blood and that has taken the jet dogs to another level. jv also has gotten on here and questioned the uchtmans for never winning on the national level-so go figure? for me to make a opinion on that, i would have to see who bred 6's dam to jet 5 and how ed came about getting the dog and at what age.
regardless, i could be way off and mr. mead has forgotten more stuff in terms of dogs in a week than ill ever know. i believe he is the best there is when it comes to winning in ukc though and he has always been a gentleman to me and i wish him the best and i would reccomend at the very least alittle jet in your blue dogs.
rance,
I think you nailed it pretty well here.
Ed is obviously a sharp individual and a real dog man, and everyone I have talked to who knows him says he is a true gentleman.
There is no one strain of dogs that is the be-all end-all.
We all like something a little different, and where we live and hunt makes a lot of difference.
I personally think we are going to see more outcossing of linebred strains on one another, and better individual s coming out of it as a result.
The fascination with inbreeding seems to be running its course, and people are realizing that it is just another tool in the toolbox, and not the only tool.
I grew up around old gamefowl breeders, and they always kept the purbreds around, but used crosses to go to the big fights, because they were often better performers.
Jet VIII is making a mark, and he is not a heavy inbred dog.
I think linebreeding is necessary to keep what you have, but you cannot improve your dogs by inbreeding; you can only intensify what you already have.
To add something you need, you have to outcross.
