allen,ukc,et al

had an idea this morning that you guys might like. i dont know much about 'facebook' websites but it seems like a facebook for hounds would be a neat thing . as you may know i have been trying to keep a thread on credit river tucker as an archive of sorts. for someone 10 to 20 years from now to be able to come back and read about tucker who may be in the fourth generation could be very handy. who owned the dog ,who trained ,what they won, who they reproduced? imagine if we could pull up a 'facebook' on old sackett, skeans dolly, rutans bearcreek princess, finley river pete, etc. the owner of the dog on record would have control to be able to edit and update the site as the feel needed. thoughts anyone?
ben brown.
these sites would be held then into perpituity by ukc for future historians, breeders etc.
gives ukc a leg up on other registries as the go to orginazation on pedigree info.

I think that there should be a panel of people that enter only objective information. Records of prodigy, hunt wins, degrees, earnings. Giving the owner the right to enter infomation makes it a good way to flub numbers. And enter exagerations on data.

I always wanted an EPD on coon hounds. But again we're not going after objective information such as birth weight, weaning weight, and ribeye circumfrence. Its kinda hard to measure when a pup is trully running an dtreeing his own coon, because most guys wait till a certain age and always will..others pour it on there pups quick, and whether they are ready or not, make them coondogs.

"Truly" a great idea....

tailkicker, yes peoples bragging could throw off the truth, but pictures, pedigrees, personal stories about hunt wins would hopefully make it worth sifting through the info. i personally would love to hear who claimed to have more lay up style , or track style, chop on tree, bawl on tree, on dogs of the past.

well, to be honest if you have an Coonhound bloodlines and keep them through the years like my dad has. You have all the "facebook" you need. Ped's, pics, pups, earnings, wins...and so...plus all the blowing who has the best hound.

On the flip side, you will have those that don't blow smoke, and may have the best hound ever.

as a breeder I'm only interested in facts.

The best way to learn about a hound is to hunt with it and its prodigy. At least your subjective view of the hound will be yours and tainted by another perspective.

Ben,

My guess that this type of thing is, from an economic standpoint, best done on an existing, 3rd party networking site, like Facebook, as you mentioned, or MySpace, with links from your profile on UKC directly to the site. Facebook and MySpace earn ad revenue, etc... from the traffic to their sites, something that compensates them for providing the free hosting services. The comparatively low number of eyeballs frequenting UKC's site doesn't command much, if anything, in the way of ad dollars from advertisers. So....UKC probably couldn't afford or wouldn't want to afford the costs to create this for coonhunters, even though it's a good idea.

You could easily create a MySpace page for Credit River Tucker and link to it from your profile. Maybe, at that point...and if enough of us did this, UKC could/would dedicate simply one page with a list of dogs by breed with a link to their respective MySpace or Facebook sites. So, it would achieve essentially the same end, but be less cost and hassle for UKC. In short, it would be feasible, rather than improbable.

Just my two cents on it.

Grant
