Hello all I'm new to these boards and fairly new to coon and squirrel hunting. I work long hours during the day 6 day a week and the only time I I can get into the wood is at night. I went and bought a grade 15 mo. mountain cur that is doing good and I think he will turn into a good dog. Enough about me. My hunting buddy' s male walker and his cur [ landers I think ] got together and now he has a litter of pups. I've spoke for 2. and in 2 or 3 weeks they will be ready to go. I'd like some advice on pick ing 2 pups. Thank in advance John.

as good a way as any is just shut your eyes reach
in and picked out a couple.then when they are old enough keep in woods. wood time is what it takes to make a tree dog when they are bred right.
an old time hunter that always kept a good pup out of his litters, was asked how he always ended up with a good pup?
his answer was, I just take what's left after everyone has picked theirs.

I always look for a pup that is outgoing but not too aggressive. I want a pup that is inquisitive and has a good attitude. No shy pups for me.

has always been to take a look at the whole litter (what ever is left). Let them run and play. Go with your instinct. It may be the ugliest, and you keep telling yourself no, but your eye keeps going back to him. Maybe its because he is the most outgoing, or he has "picked you". whatever, go with your gut, take your first pick.

Just pick which ever two reach out and grab you!!! If the pups are bred right then it ain't gonna matter which two you pick because they all should be simlar. If it is a bad cross you may still get a good one this way where if it is a good cross then it just flat ain't gonna matter. Thing is, if a dog hunts and you are happy with it, then who cares what it looks like or acts like as long as you are happy. Another way to look at it is this, even if the dog hunts hard as an adult but just clashes with your personality then you are gonna be miserable despite having a good hunting dog. Pick which two you like as dogs then keep them in the woods exposed to game and give them every chance to succeed!!!

Pretty is as pretty does i always say, if they do Pretty then looks dont matter, give me brains and desire any day
I owned a pup that was a grand son to Dimond Jim "ACHA/AKC Wourld champion" and he was a "Runty" looking little thing but he could run and tree with the best . was the "grittiest" little dog iv ever owned bar none !
If its in the jeans, just pull one out of the pile and hunt the fire out of it and your "self" it wont take long to know if you made the right choice P.S the little runts moma never raised a bad pup

They brough 3 out in a card bord box that the kids didn't want to keep. I took the first 2 to make it out of thee box. thanks for all the good info John
