Where are all the honest coonsmen?

It's been one of those days...

Just wondering, what ever happened to making a deal and actually following through with it? We have suffered a series of disappointments lately when dealing with other hound people both male and female. I have to say of the last 5 deals we have attempted to work out, only Richard Bull (Little T Kennels) and Ashley Beaver (A Dream Come True Kennel) have not disappointed us.
Here are our latest situations:

#1 Person contacts us in February regarding a female for sale. REALLY stresses how much they want her and ask to work out a deal... we agree to work with them on payments. Deposit arrives for this dog 4 MONTHS later. 1 month after deposit arrives, dog is still here, no further payments have been received, no signed contract. Person is told dog is no longer for sale (no received contract, no payment, no deal- sales policy is clearly stated on our website). E-mail is then received asking if we ever received our other payments and signed contract (didn't I just say nothing arrived?). A week later, mail comes containing contract and payment post-marked 2 Days AFTER notification was sent saying dog is not for sale... Just a few days later, dog gets injured and requires surgery. So, we are stuck with a dog for 6 months without payment, then pay for a $517 surgery two weeks ago and all her yearly vaccine expenses.

#2 Contacted by a person interested in a dog that is not listed for sale, after several communications, agree to sell dog. Supposed to leave on following weekend, weekend comes and goes dog is still here (they did let us know they weren't coming though). Agree the following week to take payments and hold him for several weeks. Supposed to receive a deposit this week, get an e-mail today that they aren't getting him now after all, but maybe next month. Luckily all we were out on this one was 2 weeks time... (there were personal circumstances that came up for this person, but still irritating).

#3 Person buys two pups, has transportation available at the last minute and is allowed to receive the dogs BEFORE full payment is received. Receive the deposit in record time. Dogs go to new home in early February... payment received late MAY. One (male) is bred TWICE before even paid for, and at 10 mos. old.

Forgot this one...
#4 Trade a youth a pup in exchange for a tracking collar that is supposed to be new. Get the collar. Completely dead, send it off for repairs costing $52. Told if we did this we would get paid back, we did... after 5 months of hounding.

I could go on about some other sour deals.. but these were the most recent. More then a little irritated today and decided to vent.

So, how many of you out there could be described like this? How many honest coon hunters are out there and where are you hiding? It seems like there is a crook behind every bush these days waiting to take advantage of you.
We thought when we put up a web page with a "strict" sales policy and started using contracts we could avoid things like this, guess not. Going to start running background checks on everyone before we do business with them!

Some things i have learned fronm buying and selling a few hounds,

**Never buy a dog on someone's word

**Dont hand over any money for a dog until all papers are in hand or the seller agrees to put in writing that the papers will be in the mail

**Never let a someone borrow hunting equipment. The only way you will get it back is if it's broken or when you go get it.

**Never go into a partnership or at least have an written agreement as to what each partner is responsible for and how the partnership will be dissolved.

**Never agree to sell a dog cheaper because the buyer offers you a pup off the dog the first time it is bred.

**Never Trust Nobody! It is bad but a good rule to go by. There are people that can be trusted, but until you have dealt with them alot, you do well to be suspect

Sounds like most of your problems you brought on yourself.

When you're wishy-washy with your sales , you'll get wishy-washy buyers.

Forget about payments and contracts. Just put the dog up for sale , cash in hand. No if's , and's , or but's. Simple as that.

Considering your method of operating, I would expect more of the same in the future.

Yep. It's my fault. If I weren't so dang interested in working with people and helping out where I can I would never get screwed, thanks for the insight.

i think you have had more bad dog deals in 2 years than i have had in 30 -

so maybe jackbob is right - or u are just too trusting- lol

most people are honest- if there word isnt good then that writen contract wont help you unless u have a lawyer in the family - lol

ive had a few bad deals

i still remember the first bad deal i had

replaced a pup that guy said died a few days after he bought it , found out later it didnt -- i gave him my pick of the litter -

another time i sold a pup real cheap that i wanted desperately to get rid of as i was leaving a hunt-

and it hung itself 6 months later-

i tried real hard to collect on that one- -
he forgot- even tho i reminded him a bunch of times-- -

the check is still in the mail

just chalk it up to cost of education

friend of mine said,

it didnt bother him when somebody didnt keep their word on a deal--

he said that was cheap price to really know what they were made of -

selling on payments and making pup deals is a bad idea , but ive bought or sold them that way lots of times with very few problems-

sometimes the pup deal thing doesnt work out and its nobodies fault-- there is no guarantee there will ever be any pups--

i dont think a written contract is worth anymore than a handshake-- but i do think its a good idea for both sides to write one and agree on it

bring up the what ifs -

the next time i will replace a pup that died- i want pictures and an autopsy

but once in 30 years i guess isnt too big a deal lol

SOMETIMES NO MATTER WHAT YOU WANT OR EXPECT, SOMETHING CAN CHANGE OVERNIGHT, AND IT'S OUT OF YOUR CONTROL.

Well, of the 15 or so deals we've made in the last two years (buying and selling) we had no problems until these. Guess that isn't so bad... but to come so close together stinks.

Since we aren't "old timers" in this, we don't know that many people yet so aren't familiar with everyone to know who to deal with and who not to. Wish people came with a warning label!

I've done horses for 14 yrs and only had one bad deal, alpacas for seven and not had one yet. Don't know if it's just more common with dogs, or we are just getting a hold of some funny people.
