A leopard cur is about as close to a hound as you can get. Most open quick, fast track dogs, good locate, and nice tree dogs that have the meat.
Fact is Leopard Curs changed my way of thinking about a cur being a first rate coon dog. Ive had plenty curs that would tree a coon, but never one that I truely felt could hold its own with the hounds. A leopard can hold its own just fine.
I would also have to give a nod to the Stephens Cur. They make good cooners and are open mouth on track.
Yes some Mt. curs will open on track, but for the most part they are tight mouthed on the ground. Super hard tree dogs thou!!!

A friend of mine has a Kemmer Cur out of Big Strut x Penny that is open on track with a bawl-chop and chop on tree. I believe that Thomas Cheney also produces some Kemmers that open on track.

coondogedog,
How old is the dog your friends? I got one for a good friend of mine. Hes off strut, and for some reason penny is stuck in my mind. This male is just as you discribed your friends dog.
Just wanted to see if they were littermates.

Eddie Mullins is the owner of "Bones". He is about 13 - 14 months old. This young dog is really turning it on in the woods and in the looks department. I wish I owned him!!

This male is the same age. I bet money thier mates. This male went from nothing to running(opening on track) in 5 hunts. Now a month or so later, he can do it all. Hes not hunted him alone yet, but he'll open and tree in front of the other dogs from time to time. hes still not a coondog, but well on his way to makeing a nice one forsure.
The guy that owns him is only 21 and this is his first treedog. Hes tickled to say the least.
I got him from Larry Calloway in Nc. He and Jamie Woods are pretty good friends.
Thanks for the info.
