Male dog killing pups

What would cause a male dog who is neutered, and has been around pups all his life, to go into a whelping pen and kill a pup??

Some females will do this if they dont like you messing with the babies... but why does a male even have access to them to start with?

Owner's fault

Why would ANYONE with an ounce of SENSE allow ANY dogs access to a whelping box or to a gyp with new pups?
A gyp with young pups should BE secure and FEEL secure from intrusion by anything or anyone other than trusted caregivers.

no other dog but the mom should have access to the pups- or even be close. the male should have never been near any pups-wheather he messed with em before or not.

I've heard that in prides of lions in Africa, every few years new males, usually brothers, will run off the old males and take over the females. They will kill off all the small kittens as some kind of genetic survival thing where this forces the female lions to have THEIR offspring and resources of the pride will not be used to support the offspring of a defeated male.

All that aside, I've never had a new litter where the mother of the litter would let another dog get close or show much interest in the pups.

its called parental investment

in the animal world their are not step-parents. So a male will only raise animals he knows are his i.e. alpha male and female in a wolf pack. This is when the male wants to ensure that his genes are the ones living to reproduce.

FIRST -- he didn't actually kill the pup, I was just in the kitchen and heard the pup yelp and went running. The pup is fine. All he had time to do was pick it up and take it out of the pen. DO I feel he WOULD have killed it had I not have been there? Yes.

My whelping pen is 4ft by 4 ft with a top kind of like a wire crate, with a front door. NORMALLY I remember to shut the gate when I let my momma outside to potty, this time, I forgot. I TAKE ALL THE RESPONSIBILITY. In 10 yrs I have never had this happen, and this male dog normally plays in the room with 6-8 week old babies and lays around with them crawling all over him. He loves babies.

I have had this particular dog in my house for about 6 years, he sleeps in the bed with my 2 yr old and have NEVER had issues with him. My 'dogs' are my kids as well as hunting dogs so unlike MOST hunters, my dogs all have access to my home. I have a dog door where they come in and out of the AC with a gate up so only the ones who are permitted have access to the entire house. My female Shorthairs all sleep on my couches or my bed and are completely ok if this dog is around them or their babies.
