ALLEN/UKC here's a question

a cast walks towards dogs on strike ( they have shut up) and ends up getting between them. If the dogs come in to the cast do they get minused strike points or is this interference.

this is the basis and there is more info that happened on a cast I was recently on. I just want everyone to know what should happen if this occurs.

Marty

Now if you walked right in on top of a trailing dog.Say trying to get to another dogs tree or something like that. I'd say interference. You say these had shut up. Why did yall walk right in on them??? Put the ol 8 on em where you last heard them. Wait where was the other dogs or was it a 2 dog cast? If I was just out walking around and one came in after they had shut up I'd minus.

Iv seen it happen before a time or two and if a dog just passes by and goes on, then there is no reason to minus, but if the dog has obviously given up and stands around then it should be minus for quiting track. Any good judge should know if they are still trying to work a track or have given up. The 8 should be running after they shut up on all the dogs struck in. BUT you didnt ask my opinion, you ask for UKC. Take care......

Has anyone ever found the word interference in the rulebook or Advisor?
Use good judgfement. Do you believe the dog has quit the track it was struck in on? If so, minus. If not, don't.

Interference
1) A mistakenly used term that pertains to the situations for which a time out may be called.

i would also put the 8 on them the rule book says that after the 8 is in use the dog must open every 8 mins or if is consider a finish and minused

If I was judgeing, I would turn out lights and back out of the way if I accidently got to close. I would let them work the track and wouldnt minus unless the dog came in and gave up. I think interferance would apply only if a highway was close by or cattle were spooking or something of that nature. A dog should not really quit a coon track just because handlers came close by.
Just my opinion............Good luck.......

If cattle spook your hound and he quits his track, you call that interefernce and delete???? Now that's what I'd call creative!

First of all,

the dogs had to be fairly close to have walked in on them that quick. Second, if the dogs were that close & quit barking why did the cast keep on walking toward where they last heard the dogs open???? If the cast was that close, they should have stopped, back aways from where they last heard them & put the time on them, but since there was less than 8 minutes left in the hunt, the only thing they had to worry about was a dog quitting the track & coming in.

In my opinion, what they should have done, when they found out that they had walked in on the dogs, was to backtrack their way back out of there as quickly & quitely as possible, about a 100 yards & see what the dogs were going to do in those final 8 minutes. Then if a dog came in to the cast, & in the Judges opinion had quit the track, minus it.

Each dog reacts differently when the cast walks in on them or gets near them, some will quit & come in to the cast, & others couldn't care less if you were standing right beside them, they will keep on trying to work the track. If I'm so CARELESS as to walk in on the dogs trailing, I would certainly give them the benifit of the doubt, of my carelessness.

Its not the cattle spooking the the hound, its the hound spooking the cattle. This is big cattle country around here and I can tell you if you run a mans cows through the fence and piss him off you,, will have alot more problems then having to call time out.... Of course it would be a rare situation and I dont turn loose in a bunch of crazy yearling cattle, but you know hows dogs sometimes get where they aint supposed to be. So, yea, Id call time and catch them and move on to avoid a pissed off, gun toting landowner......

When I have been the judge on a cast that this has happened I will not minus the dog unless it comes in an stops, then stands there looking at us.If it comes in and stops then moves on I will not minus them.I am trying to be fair to the handlers and dogs in doing this.A lot of dogs will check into the handler when you get that close. Maybe you are even standing on the track. Give them some room to work.

Marty,

I kinda like John Wittenborn's response on this one. In order to comfortably say the dogs should have been minused or otherwise, I would need a little more information. You know how it went as you were there so you probably already know the answer in a ccordance to John's as well as a few others responses. I would kindly question also why the cast had to walk into the dogs or how that came about in the first place. Sounds like forwhatever reason the decision to walk in too close may be questionable. ?????

jda,

The reference to "interfering" in Rule 17 pertains to handlers actions that might interfere with other dogs still out on trail while a tree is being shined.

I agree with John,,why walk in that close,,BUT, If my dog quits cause I'm there,or it's not smart enough to keep tracking simply because I'm there.... - EVERYTIME!

I believe it was a case of the hunt time was about to expire and the last time the dogs were heard they were closer to where the truck was so the two cast members agreed to start heading back that direction since there was only a few minutes left they were unaware that the dogs were as close as they were until they walked right into them...

the last we heard teh dogs they were trailing to the right and towards an old farm site. the hunt was almost over and so we decided to walk towards teh trucks and it just so happened that we walked right into the dogs.

it all looks different in hindsite and from now on I will NOT walk towards the dogs until the hunt is over. I feel we were standing right on top of the track as not only did my dog come into us but so did the judges and he was further away. both dogs were working the same line when they came in.

Michelle..thanks for the kind words. Rudy has her faults but I like her all in all. She is probably a better pleasure dog than a comp hound. And like you said I think that 3 of the dogs in that cast were kinda "held down"
