redbones

we were having a discussion over on coondawzs.com about redbones. someone asked if it was true that redbones were late starters. i think most people agreed that they were. is that true? what do you all think? i don't own any hounds but i like them all. i have curs and feists. it's just that inquiring minds want to know and so do i.

It really depends on the strain of redbone. There are some late starters and there are some that start as early as 3 months of age. I had one , Gr. Nt. Ch. Too The Max that started at 3 months of age and was a split tree artist at 10 months of age. I don't think it is any different than other breeds that I've owned. I also don't think that the age of a pup starting has anything to do with how they finish out and peak as coondogs. I have noticed that many dogs that start real young in the competition hunts tend to burn out by the time they are 2-3 years of age and many don't ever have a true peak period. I like to see a young dog treeing by 6-7 months of age and holding the tree on their own by 10 months of age. I've also seen some blueticks that didnt start until about 1 1/2 years of age that went on to make great coondogs and Gr. Nt. Ch.

a 12 week old redbone pup treed on a tree my pup was treeing on and acted as rhought he knew what he was doing his sire is only in america how is that for a show pup

I was trying to think of a young dog I helped a friend train that we called Dudley or Dud for short. He was out of two big name Blueticks at the time Gr. Nt. Ch. Kirby's Blue Buzz and Gr. Nt. Ch. Northern Blue Gert. He ended up going back to Denny Kirby at a little over a year of age because he wasn't doing anything. Denny got the dog going at 1 1/2 years of age and the dog became Gr. Nt. Ch. Kirby's Spike and a good competition dog. I don't get hung up on the early starters anymore. It is nice if they do and no big deal if they don't.
