I've owned and hunted 4 different breeds and I've seen 1 or 2 nice dogs from each breed, I'm not colorblind. It isn't easy to find a dog to suit 100% no matter what breed you prefer. All breeds have their share of junk.
I've just recently found that it is a lot easier to sort thru the junk in the Walker breed to find something close to what I'm looking for. Maybe it's shear numbers. Maybe it has something to do with breeders past and present producing better quality of dogs.
Personally, of the 6 breeds, the Walker is my least favorite to look at but I've seen a lot of pretty dogs from other breeds look dumb in the woods and plenty of ugly Walker dogs that can get it done.

I hunt black and tans because;
No 1. If your carefull about picking your breeding and training right, I think they can compete with any breed.
No 2. The black and tan community ( hunters and breeders) are some of the finest in the sport for friendship and sportsmanship.
No.3 It seems to me that black and tans bring a higher price when you have a good one.Im sure some will dissagree............... ( walkers are so plentifull)
This is not a slam on other breeds or walkers, I just like something other than a Lipper, Sacket, or Harry dog. There are alot of fine walkers out there, but you can get lost in the crowd
Just me opinion and worth a whole 2 cents.

I have hunted blueticks all my life. 40 yrs to date in the woods training and hunting them!! Why, you ask!! I want to either own, have bred, or have trained when young, a bluetick UKC World Champion!!! That is my goal with blues and I don't care what breeding the dog has in its pedigree if it's coon dog.. He has to be my style of hound in the woods and born a natural and be out of naturals!! Thanks Danny G.

i hunt plotts, dont run much coon, well i kill alot in a year but i go coyote huntin more then coon huntin, i just like my plotts because they have the most heart out of any dog ive ever seen, they are loyal and there arent many around so it gives me an excuse to take time from school and travel to get a dog bred lmao. also i like a dog that will take on anything it is put up against, now dont get me wrong i have a pure bred yellow lab male and he will fight any wild animal and he wont quit, but it just seems that plotts have a higher percentage of dogs that are willing to take one for the team.

well you all have logical or at least reasons that make sense.
i started out with english dogs. i just liked the looks of them and the walker/bluetick cross i was given and love to death looks like a blue english. my daughter got into blueticks. a friend gave her a bluetick pup about a year and a half ago. we ended up taking in the two litermates to bench train and try to help sell. the one pup took a liking to me. everytime he came out of the kennel he had to come over to me. i now have that pup. he'll be two in july.
and the brother that was given to my daughter? seems he likes me better. he just plain does better for me. so the blues picked me not the other way around. i like blueticks because they are more laid back and more personable than the other breeds. they are more like companions. not very scientific or anything but the truth.
my daughter took over my english dogs. she and they just got along better and now she swears by them.
sorry danny, but i plan on having the first world champion blue. i may not hunt him in the hunt but he will be my dog. who knows when that day comes mayhaps the final cast will be four blues. now that would be a good thing. huh? lol

Plotts because they are very versatile and intelligent. Also very hard hunting, eager to please and cold nosed.....

Each breed has good and bad and obviously Walkers have more of both because there is such a large number of them. I have come to the conclusion that the Plott hunters just don't care what other people think about their dogs, as long as they please their master that's all that counts. Like I said, I've hunted with a lot of good dogs from each breed, and a lot of bad from each breed.....

well we'll have to see about that. but you do have a head start on me. sam won't be ready for hunts until next year. one thing about it tho, you'll know when sam is there. he drowns out most dogs that are with him. being an old lady i have to have a loud dog. the old ears just don't work like they used to. lol. don't know where you are in ohio but i'm up here in pa about 5 mi from the ny border. we'll have to let our blues loose together sometime and see what they do. if we feel nice we might even let the girl bring her english dog. lol
we'll be at ao this year. plan on bringing sam's brother for the show. shi is as good looking a blue as you find. just don't let him open his mouth tho. he doesn't have the nice bawl that sam has. shi sounds more like a hoarse fog horn on a bad day. lol. but i still love him.

LOL thats one reason y i hunt the black dogs as well.

We have had all the breeds except english, and I liked the black dogs the best out of all of them. The black and tan is in my opinion is the most accurate treeing breed, not putting down another breeds, its just from experiance. I love hearing an old black and tan with its big long bawl mouth running that track and then treeing, there is nothin better in the world then that. I do co-own a bluetick and my dad hunts blueticks..... which they are all good hunters as well, but i think i am ganna stick to my black dogs
