Do you hunt alone?
I typically hunt with friends, it is very rare that I go "alone". I guess I started out hunting with older folks when I was too young to drive and that was always one of the draws to coonhunting for me; the fellowship. However as I have gotten older I have noticed that most folks with a really good dog often take time to hunt that dog alone, single it out, which in turn seems to add a new dimension to that dogs hunting ability.
I have tried going alone, but it seems that the first few times I always ended up with bad hunts, the dog went into the worst heck hole when there was no one with me as I crossed big water or ventured into a thick cutover.
My son is now 13 and we went last night just ourselves, which is rare....Boy did we have fun. My old dog and pup put a coon up in about 20 minutes, then I went to another spot and turned the pup loose alone...That turnout did not produce a coon but was still good for the pup as it's what a young dog needs.
I guess I was thinking last night about what has kept me from hunting alone...Safety is the one answer that seems to be the most prevelant. I am a safety leader work and there are risks associated with hunting, and being alone increases the risk. The other reason I came up with was habit, I have been stuck in a rut created by my own habits.
Do most of you hunt alone, or mostly with a friend(s)?
