ceasarian

I ended up having to take my female in for a ceasarian yesterday morning and we almost lost her after going into shock. I have a free re-breed to Freak Show or Gold but I am concerned about breeding her again as I don't want to take the risk. Just wondering whether anyone else has experienced this and had a successful, normal birth with the next litter and if there are any precautions I should take the next time.

I raise Boston Terriers so I know all about C-Sections. If your female is worth breeding again, she is worth keeping alive, so I wouldn't mess around...... Just schedule a C-Section for her at 63 days and have peace of mind. With every litter that a female has, she can have more and more scar tissue in her uterine horns which can cause a pup to get hung up. Also, the older they get, females generally have fewer puppies and we all know the fewer the puppies, the more room they have to grow and the bigger they can be.

Also, Emergency c-sections and their complications (weakened female, and possible infections set in) are a lot more expensive than planned, healthy, c-sections. I would also wait a good year before I would even consider breeding your female again. There are supplements you can buy through Revival or Drs. Foster and Smith Catalogs that prep your female for before, during and after pregnancy. I highly recommend those.

I've only done it once - I had leased a female of mine to another breeder (it was her first litter), and she ended up needing a C-section. I had nothing to keep out of her, so after talking to several breeders who had sucessfully had dogs whelp naturally after a C-section, I bred her again about a year and a half later. I wanted her to whelp naturally if she could, but I wasn't going to wait too long. I put my vet on alert, and after a couple of hours of unproductive labor, we went for the C-section, and even so, it was kind of touch and go - she was bleeding alot and they had a hard time stopping the bleeding.
If I was going to do it again, it would be a scheduled C-section.
Laurie

I would have to agree with Laurie. I dont now if the C-section isnt the way to go with older females as well.

Thanks for the advice, it will definitely be at least a year before I breed her again regardless of the c-section. I also was wondering about her milk production. The pups seem content and aren't making too much noise but she doesn't have the "bagged up" appearance and I want to make sure she has enough. Is this ok for her since it is her first litter and is there anything I can do to be positive she is producing an adequate amount ?
