I've been competition hunting for over 40 years. Most all the people that I know that competition hunt are great people and enjoy the fellowship and friendship of compition. My first question to you is "Why do you want to hunt competition???" If it's not for the fun, the sport, and the regognition for your dogs........ then get out and stay out. (Don't mean to put it so bluntly!) There are way to many people that are hunting competition that are not good for the sport. They included, but are not limited to: cheats, hot heads, smart mouths, and win-at-any-cost hunters.
If you can't make it fun, no matter the outcome, you are not good for the sport. I have been beat everyway there is possible. I've beat myself, my dog has beat himself (usually getting scratched for off game, LOL), I've been beat because I forgot a rule change, I been beat because I wasn't watching the time, I've been beat because I did not have enough dog power, I've been beat because some one else got lucky, I've been beat because I was too slow to call my dog, I've been beat because I was too fast to call my dog, AND YES, I have been beat by an unfair judge. BUT THE JUDGE SITUATION IS VERY< VERY< VERY< RARE. In every case you must learn to be a man of honor and character, accept and learn from your defeats and be ready to do better at the next one. If you can't loose well, then you will be a sorry winner as well.
Amen, Jerry West,, I just hunted the last 2 nighs in comp, and didnt win either cast.. Friday night , i just got beat fair and square and sat. night we treed 3 hollow trees with no plus. They were both judged fairly and great bunch of guys.. All of us wanted and tryed to win and at the end we all shook hands..I know comp. hunting is not for everyone, so if your faint at heart then just pleasure hunt or find another activity.. Its true some cheat, but most do not and I am speaking from alot of competition experiance........
