Dog hard to put weight on

I have a young dog that is hard to put weight on.Here lately he is having loose stool and goes frequently while hunting. I feed Diamond maroon bag. I also need some input on a new wormer. I give Ivermectin once a month but know that doesn't get all worms and parasites. Any and all info wanted. THanks Kenny

Take the pup off dog food and feed 'em boiled chicken and rice for a few days to help his system. You can add some cottage cheese or plain yogurt for protein.
I know of a recipie called Satin Balls that helps put weight on dogs. Some of my weight pulling friends use it and its wonderful. I will post it after i find it.

If you stick with Diamond upgrade to the green bag. The stuff in the maroon bag is not very good, it is a cheap version of their food, not worth what you pay for it. I tried one bag of it, all of my dogs lost weight and spent the majority of their day taking one dump after another.

Satin Balls - The Original Recipe

The following recipe was sent to Wellpet by Diana Carreon, R.N.,C. It quickly became one of the most requested posts on Wellpet.

Ingredients

10 pounds hamburger meat [the cheapest kind]
1 lg. box of Total cereal
1 lg. box oatmeal
1 jar of wheat germ
1 1/4 cup veg oil
1 1/4 cup of unsulfured molasses
10 raw eggs AND shells
10 envelopes of unflavored gelatin
pinch of salt

Mix all ingredients together, much like you would a meatloaf.

Divide into 10 quart freezer bags and freeze.

Thaw as needed and feed raw!

I've used this on rescue and performance dogs and I know of a lot of folks that swear by it. You can cut it in half or double etc to your needs.

Here is another one incase you dont want the sugar from the Total Cereal. This is guaranteed to put weight on a dog even a hard running hunting dog.

1 lb ground beef
1 8 oz pkg cream cheese
1 jar all natural peanut butter
1 jar (smaller of the sizes) wheat germ
1 doz egg yolks
1 cup or so of flaked oats soaked in heavy cream

mix all ingredients and form into meatball sized balls, freeze. Thaw and feed as treats or a supplement. DO NOT COOK!!! Feed raw.

Weight /loose stools

Take a stool sample to the vet and have them float it and check it for parasites . They can check for specific worms and also other intestinal parasitic infections like cocci, gardia ,etc. and blood in the stools. Easier and cheaper to fix if you know from the start what you are dealing with.

I worm with Ivomec monthly for heartworm prevention only and worm every three months with Strongid ,(pryantel paomate) OR Panacur(fenbendazole) alternating the two. Strongid one quarter and Panacur the next .

I had the same problem when I fed diamond. I switched feed and haven't had any problems. In my opinion Diamond is junk.

Interesting

These guys around here are always trying to get me to try Diamond . They swear its good feed . I feed The Pride feed and if I switched it would be to Black Gold or High Standard. It might be the feed ...switch it and see

i feed the green bag my labs and hounds have done well on it in the past

Wayne, I too was a dyed in the wool Diamond 26/18 fan. But my dogs were losing weight on it & pooping out large amounts of stool. I switched to Prism 26/18 & have the real hard keeper on an automatic feeder again. They are now picking up weight & eat the new food very well & it only costs me .5 cents more a bag then Diamond & the guy delivers it to my door. Seems after the 'BIG SCARE', Diamond has gone to pot! I no longer recommend it nor feed it!
