Kennel fire today!!

Well I found out today that heat mats are well worth the money to spend. My friend had a wood double dog house he built for whelping. He just had his first litter of pups a week and a half ago. He decided to put a heat lamp in there for them. We pulled in his driveway and found flames coming out of the doghouse. We got the pups out and had four of the six that were there. we finnaly found the other two in the flames and got them out but it was to late. So the heat lamp cost two pups and a very nice whelping box. So think twice about heat lamps.

Have a friend that raises bird dogs, his story is pretty much the same. Only difference was that he came home after the whole barn filled with hay and machinery was down to the ground and none of them made it. Your friend was luck to get there in time.

i have used heat lamps for years for all types of abimals with ho problems ,but i syre hesitats to yse these new lamp holders they have with the plastic fixture base and the shade screwing on to that plastic base if the base gets overgeated the plastic distorts anf the whole mess drops down idniting what ever is ynder it the old ceramic fixtores were good and the shade was fastened to a clamp made of metal , the heated mats appear pretty good but i have not trust in rhe mixture of water and electric and a litter of pups can produce a lot of water.
what i do like is those radient panels that heat objects as they come with metal grids to keep the animal away from the panel there inexpensice to run and last forever you can fing them in places that sell bird and reptile supplies also some poutry supply catalogs

I hang a small electric heater with a thermostat on one
side of the box and fasten a thermometer on the other
side. Can keep the temperature whatever I want. I start about
70 degrees and gradually lower it as the pups get older. If
the heater gets hot I build a frame around it so they can't
burn themselves. At one time I had one that didn't get
very hot on the outside but couldn't find one like that
last time.

They are a hard plastic type mat, that is thermostatically controlled, easily cleaned, can be covered with a cloth, carpet, etc. have a chew resistant cord that plugs into a standard 110 outlet, they don't stay "warm" all the time, they warm where the body or bodies are on it,we reccomend that you only use one 1/2 the size of the whelping box,so it's gives them a cool area to move to if they get to warm.. We've used them recently with 17 deg. temps and below for puppies and no problems... I'll try and post a pic this evening when I get back in....

pricing is as follows
Small (12 ½” X 18 ½”) $48.00
Medium (16 ½” X 22 ½”) $55.00
Large (22 ½” X 28 ½”) $65.00
(plus actual shipping)

Heat lamps and those heat bulbs should be pulled off the market. I've used them in the past for brooding birds, they blow and fall into the bedding and catch fire very easily! The cords and sockets on them get very hot and can combust also. Anyone reading this, stop using heat lamps. If you have to welp indoors, do it in your basement for 3 weeks or so and then they're ready to go out. Small keroseen heaters work good also, anything but heat lamps. the pups dont have to be sweating, just a little warm, Mom will do the rest.

We used a heat pad with our litter in Nov. Bought it at PETSMART don't really like petsmart but couldn't find it anywhere close and temps were dropping like a rock at that time I would never have puppies in the winter again with out one one side stays 85 degrees the other 100 degrees sounds hot but it has a insulated washable cover it never feels hot to the touch and the puppies loved it, is the most awesome thing I have ever bought for puppies

Heat Lamps.

One of the Men in our Maintenance Shop lost his house to a Heat lamp this year.
He had bought his Son a Puppy, and had the Pup, on the Front Porch with a Heat Lamp, while he and his Family were gone for an evening, the puppy tipped over the heat lamp, and it burned, the house down, and killed the puppy.
Be Very Carefull with those things, they can be very dangerous.

light bulb

I take the lid off of a mayo jar and cut a hole in it and put a light bulb recepticle in it and screw that assembly to the inside of the dog box. Then I take the glass from the jar and screw it to the metal jar lid. Works great never had any problem. The hard part is finding the old mayo jars with the metal lids.

Another possibility is the heated whelping nest, like the one here
http://www.quinncarlin.ca/store/
It keeps the puppies warm, and keeps them together - I gather that you cut a hole, and screw it into the floor of your whelping box....not cheap, but probably worth it.
