My first coonhound was a male directly off Magic. At the time I got that pup, Magic was a Grand Nite but relatively unheard of. Anyway, my pop was doing pretty good but he ran a fox or a deer on me a couple days before the World Hunt started, I think that was '85. I lost him for 11 days. I actually went to Columbia City looking for another dog as I had given up on finding him. The whole time this was going on, Magic wins the World Championship. So here I was with a decent young dog off the World Champion and he's lost.
I did end up finding him right where I lost him 11 days later. He looked like he'd been running deer for 11 days too, lol, rough. He ended up making a pretty good dog for someone's first hound but his whole life I never could trust that he wouldn't run something off. You might hunt him a month straight with no junk then the next night he'd run a fox all night.
I'll tell you another quick story about him. Fielder and I were hunting one night and his old Bronco dog and Bronco and my dog were treed in this section. While we were shining the tree, all of a sudden another coonhunter walks up to us. Neither one of us knew him. He said he walked all the way into that tree to find out what hound it was that had such a beautiful mouth. Then he pointed at the Plott dog and said, "Not that one." Haha, we had a good laugh over that. That magic dog I had did have the purest hound mouth I've still ever heard.
