what would you like to know? I don't claim to be an expert, but i've owned and hunted jagds for a couple years now.

We are wanting one to varmint hunt with my husband. He will be taking early retirement the last of Dec. We are full time farmers too (raise corn, beans and cattle). We will keep it in the house and it will go with him constantly to the main farm. My husband is excellent about putting a high degree of obedience training on his dogs and he is very patient too. My concern is about their prey drive. I have heard there are some jadgterrier that are very hard to handle and do not desire to work with their owner but instead range far from the handler. We are wanting one that will be easier to handle in the field and in the home. Some articles say they are one owner dogs and might tend to be biters. True or not. Just a few notes on the way you keep yours and the way they handle for you. Also do they get along with other dogs? Thanks so much for your time and patience with a newbie.

From my experience all of your concerns are valid. The jagds that i own have a tremendous prey drive. They love to hunt. I have had some experience with a few jagds that are strictly inside dogs and they are very intelligent and obidient. If you are going to keep them inside and demand a high level of obedience then a lot of time must be given to them. Some can be agressive with a tendency to dog fight. Mine are not that way, but i will not tolerate any of this either. They are however very agressive (gamey) on the game that they are pursuing. Coons, possums, skunks, or any other small game for that matter doesn't stand much chance around the jagds i have. A firm hand (if you know what i mean) is very important when it comes to obedience around people and other dogs. I don't think any of mine would ever bite anyone, and i have two females kennel together along with a beagle and have had no trouble. However i have owned some that shouldn't be penned with another dog. These dogs were grown when i got them though. For what you are wanting a jagd will be a lot of work, but very rewarding in the end.

Cyndi , what you asked about is true for every dog breed .

Most jags bred here in the U.S. have retained alot of the core traits that make a jag hard to handle like you said , but the finer points that make them worth having are pretty rare to find .

If you like Jack Russells and can find someone close to you that has them and ues them you'd probably get a better first pup ... once you get experience with terriers and if you NEED more horsepower then you will probably gravitate toward a jag or fell/patterdale.

Your location and finding someone near you that works terriers will be the more important than breed ,imo.

I am quite familiar with breeders who show in the breed ring, folks who do agility and many who show in obedience but I do not know any folks who use their terriers for what they were bred for. Kind of sad.

I have given thought to a jack russell. My sister had a male that we had to suture the whole lower jaw (skin) back in place on. A coon ripped the hide from the mooring, near his lips. He sat there and took it like a champ. Never growled or offered to bite. Of course he had a healthy respect for her and what she would do to him if he bit her (we are horse women and farmers, don't mess with us.. HA! HA!). No anesthetic, nothing. Just a good curved needle and suture material. Healed up great. He was one tough little guy.

But Dana is convinced he wants a jagd. I wish we could find some in Ohio, WV, Ky or In that we could go see. It might make this decision easier.

Thanks for the input.

By the way Justin, that tough little Jack Russell came from Oklahoma. A breeder near Durant if I remember right.

Hawg Wild, I have contacted Scott and he is getting some info ready for me on a planned breeding. Thanks for your time.
