i have a 1 1/2 year old blue dog that will bawl maybe twice or three times while on track and thats it till he locates then is pretty quite again till he see my light.

is there any way to get a dog that is pretty much a silent on track to bark more.

also what is the best way to get a hound get a houd to stay open before he see my light.

last night was the worst. it was pretty windy but we went for a couple drops anyways. he opened about 1/4 mile away, gave about three chops and then that was it till he located about 1/2 mile away that we could barely hear. then bawled once or twice every minute or so. till i got there then his bawl picked up once he saw our lights comming down the hill.

im not expecting him to ever become extremely hard tree dog or a dog that chops every second he is tracking but am hoping to get him to open more than he is.
any advice would be wonderfull

had the same problem with my dog bob snow told me to chain him back dont let him have the coon when u shot it out show it to him but dont let him have it when u shot make sure he is chainded back far enough so he sees it fall but cant get it he will start barking when he sees the coon

and may get more vocal on his own. Some of them have trouble trailing and barking at the same time at first, just like some people have to learn how to walk and chew gum at the same time : )

My redbone responded well to me letting him know I was coming in. No good on a competition dog, but works fine on a pleasure dog. As long as I let him know I am coming in, he wants to communicate with me and will respond, letting me know he is treed and where. If he comes off the tree, there's a different, sort of impatient/annoyed response.

when you get to the tree just really pet him up and get him excited. just keep petting him and excited before knocking the coon out. this has helped me in the past. he will catch on soon.

Check his ears and make sure he doesn't have a problem (mites or canker).

chris. what would this have to do with him not opening more on trail and tree? irratating him when he barks? lol he barks all the time in the kennel. so much he is horse now. i have to go out and buy a bark collar soon i think.

Coonsmen:

You must hunt comp. Why would you want to change this dog? My male is 8 and is even more still than what you described. I'll take that dog any day because it's those type of dogs that pile up the coon, especially in late Jan when they have been chased hundreds of times.

nope no comp hunts yet. when he gets out there a mile or so and isnt opening, without a tracking collar he is hard to find.

Have had some simlar experances in the past so here go's I would by that bark coller they are worth their weight in gold if you use them correctly ,excessive pen barking can permantly damage his voice ? also I would have his ears checked canker or mites or a infection will cause a dog not to bark as much or as hard due to the pain caused by barking I would have the vet check if for nothing else just so Icould rule it out as a cause . now with that said their is very little you can do to change how a dog will use it mouth on track so odds are goood the way he is now is the way he is going to be. at the tree is anouther thing you can some times get a dog to tree a little harder 1 don't go into the tree and blow the coon right out and go on tie him up and spend at least 5 min at every tree encourgeing him to tree then go ahead and shoot the coon if you want to 2) rember that not all dogs are the same 3) after you have worked with the dog for copale of mo. sit down and honestly ask yourself if this is the type of hound you wanted if the answer is Yes good deal if not it's Probaly time to look for one that hunts the way you like them to .
