Couple of Stories...

Went Turkey huntin' with my dad on Sat. I dropped him off at his spot and then went to mine. I didn't see any Turkeys so I switched to a different game. Squirrels. Two came out and were playing tag and when they were on the ground I waited for their heads to line up and shot them both with one shot. (I was using a 20 gauge). I blew the head off one and a shoulder off the other.

After huntin Sat. we went riding around the farm scouting for deer and saw 8 deer carcasses lining the ditch of a half-mile road. (Thinkin what I'm thinkin?) POACHERS!

Went out lastnight hunted on the river and treed a big one. Then went to another spot and treed another. It was a nice night, dogs did good, I was pleased with them and it was getting late so we went home.

last night

I'm glad you folks are having some good hunts . Last night my son and I went and the leaves had covered the floor of the woods like shag carpet . The wind was blowing in a cool front and conditions just weren't very good . The first track the old dog hit was a bad track that she was having trouble with and only opened a few times with long periods of silence in between. I told Nathan that it was sure giving her fits . Well the wind picked up so we moved around the hill a little and Nathan says " I think she's treed" We worked our way around the hill to her and found her treed on a cedar tree with a persimmon tree growing right up into the cedar . NO COON!!
Got her off there and headed back towards the truck because I knew if I turned her loose there she was going deep and with the wind blowing we wouldn't be able to hear her.
We got back to the front side of the hill and she was winding up the hill above where a spring comes out and we usually hit one there but it always goes straight up the hill in the ground or into a hollow den . I turn her loose any ways hoping that she will get treed rather than put it in the ground or we are going to be in for a long night . Again she strikes one bark but is having trouble on the ground with the full blanket of fresh dry leaves. She moves on up the hill with another bark on the ground and then Bam!! Treed !! Get up the hill to her and it's that ole hollow den tree . Wind blowing about 20 miles an hr but with a few dry leaves still on the trees it's really noisey so we call it a early night and didn't see a coon . Oh Well!!
Rains moving in today and season starts here in the Bluegrass tommorrow so things WILL get better !!

Adding a pic ; ps: I know the old dogs fat but give her a break, she'll be 11 years old in April !!

This was on the first tree, persimmon and cedar.

Oct. 30th:
went out about 7:30 and just took my old dog Buddy and a 5 month old pup off of him. the cut them loose down a holler and struck in in about 10 minutes, the pup went with him although didnt open but a few times throughout the turnout. Buddy tracked for a good 20 minutes before Rolling up treed on a huge Red oak tree on the edge of a large creek bank. when i arrived in the tree the puppy was there w/ him. and i tied him up shined for the coon and found him near the top all snuggled up. a couple of 22 shorts later the coon ran down the tree and fell out and the fight was on. the coon died a few seconds after he hit, then i did some training on the pup, i laid a drag for him about 50-60 yards down the creek and hung it in a tree high enough that he could not reach. went back and i cut him loose, he silent tracked it the whole way to the tree and man WHAT A LOCATE ON A PUPPY, talk about CHILLS. then he broke the screams over to a hard chop and then i gathered the 2 up and went to the house and i was home by 9:00

oct. 30th

went out 8:00pm turned pup loose by himself. Gone for 20min. then came back so i turn him across the other side of the road. a cold front was coming in with 20+ mph winds, haven't heard a peep for another 20min. all of a sudden he gave a couple BIG locates and rolled it over. i grabed the .22 and went to him, there sat a big ole grinner, all of a sudden out of nowhere a electrical storm hit and the pup decided to call it a night!!!

Took my 14 month old female, Gem, a 2 year old B&T female Saydee and my 6 month old Jack dog. First cut, Gem struck, then Jack, ran it for about 15 minutes and treed. Didnt hear anything out of Saydee. They had the coon. Second cut, Gem struck, then Saydee, then Jack. Ran it screamin and fast through a corn field, through a barn, and up an old dead tree in about 10 minutes, they were all treed and had the coon. Last drop, all three struck, ran it about 1/2 hour into and over a holla, Gem and Saydee were split treed about 8 feet from each other. Jack was treed with Gem and they had the coon. Saydee didnt but oh well. It was a very successful night for the young dogs and pup.

Halloween Night-

After the trick or treaters were done doing there thing. Dad and I took off for a hunt. It's always competition around my house. Jeremy and Tony had already left to hunt an hour an half ahead of us, in fact I was already half asleep when dad wakened me to get the dogs and see if we could get a few more coon before the other two got home. When we had last talked to them on the phone they had one and were walking into the second. Well we took Little Dozer and Diamond. I'll be honest Diamond was Slick on the first tree, but with the help of Dozer soon figured it out and there was one coon down, next we decided to hunt the creek on the way back to the house, Diamond Struck and Dozer trailed silent, Dozer first on tree followed by Diamond. Coon seen: two down. Continued to head towards home Diamond was put on the leash now and Dozer still hunting fell treed under my feet had the meat big boar without a tail.
Four Trees: Three Coon, hunted for an hour and a half. Not that bad, I guess for someone who had planned to sleep the night away. Well we beat out the other two guys for they had two and we had three, like I said it's always competetion between whoever leaves my house for a hunt.

Hunting Log

10 - 31 -06

One of the old timers (Kenneth N.)called me yesterday and said they had a coon down on Sinking Creek that was giving the dogs fits. Wanted to know if I would go with him and take the old gyp along with his young dog and see if we could get him .
We turned loose on the bank of the creek right below where an old barn stands and right where they had hit the coon on several occasions. We had his young female ,my old gyp, and a pup my son has been hunting some . Took a few minutes to get worked up the creek and then the old dog struck followed quickly by the other two and the race was on . A good hot running track that was running the creek bank . The track went a short ways and went in the ground . His dog wanted to bark in the hole a little but we let them work and soon the young dog had pulled away and headed up the creek to catch up with the old dog. The pup I had was in on the track and opened good but then came in while the others headed on up the creek. We waited a good while and heard nothing so I got the tracker out and located Kate's direction but she was deep and the tree switch was not going off . I told Kenneth she would find another coon before we saw her again . WE moved on out the road to another spot to run the tracker on Kate and she seemed to be across the road on another farm and in pretty deep , Apparently there is a portion of the creek that runs back up thru this other farm and winds around thru some hills . We thought we could hear the dogs so we moved back thru some pasture fields on this farm and got back in the hills and sure enough the dogs were treed , We were able to drive almost to them and walked only a short distance and found them split treed on two hollow trees. Kates tree was a forked tree and the one fork was dead and broke off and hollowed out . I was able to clmb my way about 10 foot off the ground and look down into the hollow and sure enough there was the fur all balled up in the bottom. His gyp was treed on another hollow about 20 yards away and it was a bigger tree that I couldn't get up to check .
We leashed them away from there and loaded them and called it a night, getting back home at 9 :30 .

The fellow I was with will be 67 on Fri and he used to hunt with my Father in law when he was alive and Kenneth and my father -in law took me on my first coon hunt almost 30 years ago . I always enjoy getting out with one of the few old timers that are left in our area. We always reminicse about the old days.

Lets hear about your hunt !!

Angela, I have Junior's Plaque for first in the water race on SAturday. Dozer is a water demon. SAdie finished behind him in 2nd place, but about 20 seconds behind. It was her first water race. Dozer can Swim!

Well have been kind of lazy since last competion hunt. Decided i would go last night take Fred get him ready to start traing some pups and getting sguared away for a non stop of hunts. Turned lose at 7:30 nice 1/2 moon shineing really did not need a light. Cut him into this beaver pond about 2 minutes struck started to hook left knew it was going to be a bad night. Fred worked track good swiming and driving track. You could tell when he would hit a patch of water that he could run in The chase would speed up his second trip thru the pond I seen the coon cross the road but he had give Fred the slip on the beaver dam and patches of high land took him about 3minutes to catch up to were the coon had crossed the road I learned my lesson about not catching him up when he crosses ther during the week when you have to work the next day. Because you are getting ready to have a long walk and proably going to get wet. Before you get there. Coon won round one round two tonight,

Took my two walkers out on satutrday night and it was a good night to go out here in Ohio and as soon as I turned them loose both opened and fell treed about 40 yards away. NIce size coon but not season YET

The next cut they had to work a little harder for but they both fell treed on a little tree but man was it a monster coon wish it would have been coon season because it was at least in the 20 to 22 lb range

Well just 9 days left til season opens

Good luck to everyone out there but dont kill em all

Hunted or local wma. Cut loose hear nothing for about 30 min. Trackem and the are a long way off probably a mile. Pulled around and caught em up.2nd drop. Cut loose same thing tracked and was tracking on high side.So we pull around again get out and here em treed. Walk our butts off only to be treed in a big leafy tree. I myself think it was slick!!!!!!Called a buddy to pick us up on another rd where we would not have to walk back out up hill. 3rd turn out. No barking what soever rounded em up after about 45 min.4th turnout same thing.5th turnout they were getting wore down some still not a bark so we catch em again.6th turnout. Got checked by the game warden who snuck up on us with his lights out. Finally treed a coon on that 6th turnout. Called it a night or morning which ever. Man dont you just love hunting in THIN COON!!!! I know yall might think all this catching and cutting is crazy but if you dont try an cutem to were you can pull around and get em here. You can get in some great big woods with no rds for miles in either direction. Now thats fine with me on flat land but not these mountains!!!!

Cory Ehlinger and me took Quick out for the second time since getting lucky! Dropped her at 6:30 and treed a double. Next we took his Dolly Female (She made the final 100) around 7:00 and she treed a single. Dropped Quick again around 7:30 and found her treed about a mile away with another double. While walking to the tree got a call from the wife informing me about a headache to get home and watch the kid. Night cut short at 8:30.
