Bench Show Question???

it's LUKE!!!! not only is he a good coondog, he's my buddy lol..gives me a hug everyday lol...

i don't know if it's bench show material or not..but i sure thought it was a good picture anyway...he's a little over-weight i know...and he didn't wanna get on that table which is all i could find so i had to pick him up...i'd say he's pushin' 100 pounds, lol i don't know really but when i had to pick him up he was heavy LOL..

if nothin else i think its a good picture, but thought i'd get some opinions on how it would look in a bench show...
couldn't get the picture to work so here's the link...........

As long as any dog meets breed standards. You can make them a grand ch .If you go to Enough shows....LOL...Hes a good looking dog..Ive found here lately anyway. The show judges are leaning more to dogs that can run and tree a coon. Over dogs thats never been in the woods..You can tell if a dogs being hunted or not if you look close enough.....

UhOh! If judges start picking hunting dogs, the bench show folks will have to trade their grooming brush and chalk for a wire brush. A dog trader around here used to take a wire brush to a dogs ears and nose to make them look like they had been hunted. I hope it doesnt come to that. JK

Russel,
that's something my dad always told me about coon dogs...u always want to get the one that had scars all over its face, said an old dog with no scars has never seen a coon...so far he's been right....but now i have heard of what u said about the wire brush....it's sad that people would do that just to sell a dog...

Luke has had a couple coons knocked down on him, but he ain't got that ole "scare face" yet lol...just give me time lol...

I know I am probably going to get some static over saying this but I get so tired of hearing show dog/hunting dog...if you have to catagorize I guess so be it but my personal feeling are there are a lot of good looking hunting dogs that meet breed standards that should be shown, and in reverse I am sure there are some world show champions out there that could sure win a nite hunt if that is what the owner wanted to do, personal preference, as for your dog from the picture it looks like he meets breed standard and as for judges, they all look at different things, that is why you hear so many people complain about loosing...LOL...I commend you if you want to show and hunt, go for it, you will win and you will loose just like the rest of us, just do your thing and be proud of it, you know it never hurts to give a hunting dog a bath once in a while...LOL Good luck, I will be looking for some new posts with your wins or maybe losses, it is all in loving the sport of coondogs!!

Sammy, i liked ur post....personally, i prefer a hunting dog...but hey, if there's something else to win and u can, i say go for it...

my dog hunts and tree's....i wanna enter a hunt with him...hadn't got to hunt him as hard as i wanted lately so not entered no hunts yet, and the main thing is, i'm not ready yet...i know alot about coon hunting..but as for competition hunting, i don't know all the rules yet, whether my dog wins all the hunts he ever enters, or loses all the hunts he enters, i want it to be because that's what "HE" does, not because i caused him to lose for not knowing the rules...from what i do know, i think i got a good chance of winning maybe a couple hunts, or at least doing pretty good...never know till entered though, so till i get it worked out till i'm comfortable with it, i'll be in the woods treein' for the enjoyment of hearing him howl through the woods...

but i'll sure post pics if i win, or tell the sad news if i lose, bench show or night hunt lol...

Kevin

ask a local judge

Every one has a slightly different oppinion of the interpritations of the breed standards, so if one judge doesnt like what he/she sees and you MUST ASK!!LOL try another. I can tell you as being a judge first off it is almost imposible to fully tell if any dog is of breed standard , or show material without 1- seeing it gait 2 without seeing the bite and 3 if the dog is fully in tact with the genitle area. I can tell you what I do see and you can work on as maybe just been the way he was placed on the slick box... his back legs his hocks are turn in letting his toes face out and on his front feet are appearing to be a little flat. He deffinately needs worked more(not a diet LOL!) If he was to drop some weight this could help him come up on his toes more. The best advise I can give you is take him to a local event and set him up and ask the judge for his or her oppinion or advise. Do not get discouraged as it is just that an oppinion! You do have a very nice looking dog and to me should make champion and I wish you lots of luck. Sandi Pratt
