I HAVE A PUPPY NOT 5MONTHS OLD YET WILL TREE SQUIRRELS ,BUT ALSO HE FOUND HIM A DEER YESTERDAY .RUN FOR ABOUT 20 MINUTES .WOULD YOU TRY & CORRECT NOW OR SEE IF DOES AGAIN .

sounds like you have him running loose. Tie him up.

Then turn coons loose for him, so he knows what you want himto do.

If he just ran it for 20 min., I wouldn't shock him at all. Let him learn to run a track. If it gets to be several hours, than you might half to shock him soon. I don't like using a shock collar until they run and tree a coon by themselves consis. But, thats just my opinion. I think you can ruin there spirit if not careful

I absolutely would not shock that pup for running deer at his age.Because he doesnt know what your desired game is,you would basiclly be telling him if he uses his nose to track,he is going to get a sharp pain in his throat and neck.(E-collar)
Every pup that I have messed with that ran deer at his age,went on to make a coondog and could really move a track.As already stated,once he is familure with treeing coon,and he really wants to stay after a deer,then drive him around until you see a deer standing and turn him loose on it.Dont wait for him to open on its track.When its obvious that he is trailing the deer and showing entrest in getting after it,buzz him about med. setting.Do not freak him out.He will get the messasge.Good luck,Lowell

I have a lot of luck with my shocker, but I dont think popping them for off game is always the best way to introduce them to it. I really start disciplining my dogs at say 4 months, depending on the dog. I expect them to quit barking when I tell them. I use the shocker to reinforce this. I will also teach them to come with it.

Like the feller said above, introduce him to some coons and not a bunch of trash.

My dogs know what "NO" means before they are ever hunted, they know a shock means "STOP". Then if off game gets to be a problem I'll shock them. One time on a deer is not a problem.

A shocking collar is a good tool but you need to teach the dog what it means and how to respond to it. Have you ever seen dogs that didn't hunt quite the same the rest of the night after being shocked? Most of the time these dogs aren't really sure what is going on.

That being said , if I have to shock one constantly to keep him straight, he aint my kind of dog.
