Coonhunters, beware there are idiots out there!

Monday night, Sept. 24th in McMinn County, TN, two young coonhunters in their very early 20s were coonhunting off a public road when their dogs went onto private land. The next thing they knew someone began to shoot at them. The young men hurried to their truck and got inside to leave the area when a bullet pierced the truck, went through the seat and struck one of them. He is now in intensive care after surgery, struggling for his life. The local news report stated that the doctors have done all they could do for the boy and only prayer would help, now. Please take the time to pray for this young man who has a wife and two small children. And please beware when you go hunting.

That is why I carry most of the time when hunting or just being outdoors. If someone shoots at me they are going to have a hard time getting off well aimed shoots they'll be too busy ducking the return fire.

This is sad I hope they find out who did this and take them out in the street and beat them like they should be and then hang them from the highest tree they can find...

It isn't going to get any better. coonhunters and all sporting dog owners need to get off their butts ( and this darn site) and protect your right to hunt and educate the general public on why we love to do what we do!!!!

If you don't have permission, why are you hunting them? This is one of the worst things we can do to give all hunters a bad name.

your supposed to pour the gas in before you screw the door and windows shut, its safer that way.

its hard to pour gas on a fire

Latest Update on Young Hunter, shot

The Daily Post Athenian newspaper of Athens, TN updated the condition of the young hunter, who was shot while trying to retrieve his dogs while hunting coons, yesterday. He finally awoke from a comma and has been removed from intensive care at the University of Tennessee Hospital in Knoxville, TN yesterday morning. He is still in critical condition. Local law enforcement, McMinn Co., TN still refuses to make any comments other than "no one has been questioned from the area", "we have no suspects", can't tell what calibur the bullets were because they fragmented too much", etc. etc.

Looks to me that since three rounds hit the truck, one hit a tire, and one hit the boy at least one round could be intacked enough to tell at least what calibur it was. Something else, the boy was struck in the hip from a bullet shot through the truck. That tells me it had to be a high calibured weapon. But, I can not figure out why the boy was in a comma from a shot to the hip unless he struck his head falling?

Maybe, more information will come soon. If so, I will post it. In the mean time, continue to pray for this young hunter and his family.

If we dont have permission to hunt on the property you shoud still have the right to go after ur dogs. We only go on others ppl property if our dogs are treed. During season we do not shoot these coons we just grabe our hounds and get the Heack out of there!. LMAO!

I am very sorry to hear about the man that waqs shoot. We are praying for him and hope he pulls through.

Well it won't matter much. There is never much help from law enforcement when something like this happens. For the most part they don't like coonhunters because in their mind if you are out around midnight you are up to no good. You just HAVE to be drinking or doing something illegal or you would be home in bed.

People that hunt on ground they don't have permission on don't help anything though. People get tired of their rights as property owners to decide who uses their land being violated. (there's a difference in intentionally hunting on land you don't have permission to be on and the dogs getting out of pocket).

It's not like it would be too big a mystery who was doin the shootin if they know which house they came out of.

Sounds like those boys stumbled up on some dope of some kind or had pushed somebody to their wits end one or the other.

The bad part is with the prejudice for coonhunters that is displayed by many in law enforcement more often than not even when the coonhunter is in the right and innocent nothing gets done.

i tend to agree with the writer who said it must be a high caliber gun. to go through the truck and hit hard enough to cause the boy to go into a coma would not in my opinion be your everyday normal hunting gun. well mayhaps i should back up. my horse was hit by a 30 o 6 deer rifle bullet while standing in his stall. the gun was fired at close range tho but went through the side of the barn. it still sounds as tho these hunters stumbled across something very illigal and the cops aren't messing because they are afraid to. i know in my area we have a known drug dealer and he gets away with it because anyone who investigates comes up missing. therefore the cops know of him and do nothing. i think that should be a case of pouring gas, locking doors and windows and throwing the match in. sounds rather off the top but i can't abide drug dealers.

I WORK WITH YHE BOYS FATHER SO HERES THE LATEST! THEY WERE SPOTLIGHTING. BIG DEAL, WE ALL DO STUPID THINGS. WHATS BAD IS HE WAS IN THE ROAD GETTING INTO THE BED OF THE TRUCK WHEN THE SHOTS WERE FIRED. ONE SHOT WENT THROUGH THE TAILGATE THEN HIT THE BOY. THATS WHY THEY DONT KNOW THE CALIBER. ALSO A PIECE OF THE TAILGATE CAUSED MOST OF THE DAMAGE TO HIM ACCORDING TO THE DOCTORS. THIS BOY IS 20 WITH 2 KIDS AND ONE ON THE WAY. HE IS IN BAD SHAPE BUT IS GOING TO ESCAPE WITH HIS LIFE. HE WILL MOST LIKELY BE DISABLED FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. AS OF NOW THEY DONT KNOW ALL THE DAMAGE THAT HAS OCCURED BECAUSE OF SWELLING. ALL BECAUSE SOME DUMBA$$ TOOK THE LAW INTO HIS OWN HANDS. I KNOW HIS FATHER AND MOTHER COULDNT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR ALL YOUR PRAYERS BECAUSE HE TRUELY WAS TOUCHED BY THE HAND OF GOD TO MAKE IT. HE HAD A HOLE IN HIM THE SIZE OF A GROWN MANS FIST IN HIS SIDE. SO PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED!!!!!!!!
