I've let one of my dogs nails get longer than i like and hunting her isnt wearing them down. I cut just a little bit off last Thursday and then a little more this past Thursday and she cried like i was killing her. They didnt bleed but i know i hit the quick a little bit. Her nails are black so i cant see where the quick is. How do i get the quick to go back so i can keep them short? And how often do i need to cut them to get them to the length i want? Did the same thing with a 5 month old pup i have and one of its nails is bleeding bad.

Sounds to me like maybe the feet are sore from the long nails. If you are not sure about how do do it, take the dog to a vet and they will charge about $5 to trim them, then you can keep them trimmed. Hope this helps..........................Tim

take a rasp or a file go around the vain this
will make the nail easier for the dog to break
while hunting.i hardley ever use clippers.

I always cut just a bit off. Look at the end towards the quick. You can see where it is when your close. You can get some I call the burn sticks from your vet just in case you cut to close and they bleed. If so just put the stick on the end and it stops the bleeding. Some dogs are just wussies when it comes to nail cutting. Little at a time and just inspect.

My nephew has a doberman that is his seeing eye dog . The dogs nails are very dark and it's hard to see the quick. Heres what I did. I trimed them just a bit with the clippers and then filed them with a good sharp file until i could see the quick. Sometimes a bad experience with the nail clippers on a pup will really make for problems down the road . My old female has been cut a little too close a few times and she hates getting them clipped while the other two dogs have not had any bad experiences and they are no problem.

Do the nails every couple weeks for a while and you will see that you can shorten them some in a few weeks as the quicks begin to receed back into the nail. Frequent trimming is the key to getting the quick shorter but use the file or a dremmel tool when you get close to the quick.
