Training question

We have a English female that has become hard to catch. She isn't a problem when she has been running loose at the house for a couple of days, she will usually come when called. When out hunting however she doesn't want to be caught. Seems like she just doesn't want to quit. Any ideas? We always pet her up when we catch her, haven't punished her even when she made it a chore to catch her. Thanks!

I would suggest using a shock collar, when she doesnt obey you when called give her a shock. Dogs have to be shown who is the boss or they will run over you. One thing I hate is a dog that dont lead or to watch one dragging someone on a lead.

Before you use punishment try using reward and by that I mean if you let her run loose at the house go out and try calling her and if she comes give her a treat like a piece of hotdog or a dog bone out of a box,etc... and give her praise and do this several times not just two or three times,an E-collar can hurt more than it can help if not used right!

its not for punishment its for discipline. I've had this happen before and I know the dog (not pup) knew i couldnt catch him on foot. He would get within 10 foot and then turn and run away.I used the shocker a couple of times on him and he decided it was best to come to me. I agree shockers can be abused but when a dog comes close to you and then turns and runs because he dont want to be caught then he's being the master not the owner. And i for one want put up with that. An undisciplined dog is a terrible thing in my book.

e collar

shock collars are ok when used right, but as far as getting one to come to ya usin one in my opinion it may work in the exactly right situation but when you shock them for that i dont konw if they always will associate the shock with them not comin and you can do more damage than good but thats just in my experience.there are better ways to teach a dog than shockin the hell out of them. if you just take a little time and patience and some repitition they will get it most of the time. but anymore people are lazy and dont want to take the time to work with a dog. they just want it at the snap of a finger. i like training my dogs. its fun watchin them learn

TRAINING

PUT A DUMMY SHOCK COLLAR ON YOUR DOG IF YOU DON'T HAVE A DUMMY JUST PUT THE COLLAR ON HER, BUT DON'T USE IT FOR 2 OR 3 DAYS. CHARGE THE COLLAR THE DAY BEFORE YOU'RE GONNA START TRAINING. PUT A 10 OR 12 FOOT ROPE ON HER LET HER RANGE OUT CALL HER BACK, IF THE DOG DOESN'T RESPOND SHOCK HER LIGHTLY THEN INCREASE THE COLLAR LEVEL UNTILL YOU GET HER ATTENTION THEN PULL THE ROPE INTO YOU WHY YOU'RE CALLING HER. REPEAT THIS OVER AND OVER UNTILL SHE RETURNS ON THE FIRST COMMAND. AFTER THAT GET A LONGER ROPE. GO TO A DIFFERNT AREA AND REPEAT THE TRAINING SESSION. WHAT YOU'RE TRYING TO DO IS CREATE MORE DISTRACTIONS FOR THE DOG UNTILL THE DOG DOESN'T CARE ABOUT ANYTHING BUT COMEING TO YOU WHEN CALLED. ANY QUESTIONS PM ME.

Angie

Start with the long lead first...25' or so...make one with a snap and rope or get a horse lounge line. This in combination with the shock collar. Take her to the woods in the evening cut her out in an open area and call her back, if she doesn't respond give correction with the LL and a beep with the shock collar....if she responds love her up...if not more correction on the LL and a level 1 stimulation...progress from there.
Some you can never get to come in from the hunt until they are ready....
wishing you good luck with this,
Mike

puppy training

Angie, I sure know what you mean. We have a young female English that I use to let run loose while I clean the kennels. Then she got to be a pain trying to catch. I've since started staking her out beside the pond where she can swim and run around. My husband took her to othe woods and couldn't catch her. So he left her for awhile. We fortunate that we live near the "hunting grounds" and are able to do this. When he drove back to get her, she was ready to load. I worry about using a shocking collar on her at this age. However, my husband did use it to make her stop barking while riding. I think she might get it confused with the tracking collar and won't bark at all. Dang if you do, and dang if you don't. Good luck.
