What kinda hunter are you....getting treed by a lil piggy? LOL

Since I slept through biology class I know you can answer this question for me.

I don't think I have seen a human with different colored eyes. They are both the same color. How can dogs be different? Half of Newlin's kennel has different colored eyes....he likes em' ! LOL (Just pickin Joe).

1 of the many things in life I can't figure out.

Oh....and by the way...I've seen humans with two different eye colors.....but it's RARE.....

The color pattern that is responsible genetically for the patterns you see in SOME of my dogs....is known as a spotting pattern.

It is related to the Piebald pattern seen in horses and is often called Pinto or Paint.

Spotting is a recessive color pattern, meaning that it will be "covered up" by the dominant solid color pattern...

Dogs and in fact horses that are homozygous (do not carry the dominant gene for solid coloring) will display more white. The white is caused by a lack of pigment, and can affect the color of the eyes. When the lack of pigment crosses over to the eyes, then you have the white (blue) eyes.

There is a recognized pattern of spotting in dogs...the picture below outlines the color patterns....



You are likely to have a blue eye in patterns 3, 9,10, 11, and 14 in dogs who are homozygous (carry both recessive gene patterns) for spotting.

I watch the color on the tail....I've never had a pup born that did not have some color on the tail....

Thanks Joe, that explains it somewhat...good enough for my simple mind. I just thought you collected the ones with the special eyes. LOL

I know you are also a horse fancier. I seen in our local news rag a story about a horse in southern Indiana that gave birth to twins and all was doing well. I didn't realize how unusual that is either. I guess in 45 years, I've never heard of a horse having twins. Imagine the poor Clydesdale mare giving birth to twins? LMAO !

It's not unusual for a mare to conceive twins, most of the time one of the fetus is re-absorbed by the mare. We have all of our mares ultra sounded, and any twins are "pinched off" by the vet.....it greatly reduces the chance that the mare will abort both of the foals....

Since the "Proof is in the Pudding" I don't think Joe cares about a little ribbing.

One of my favorite actresses, Somewhere in Time, Jane Seymour has two different color eyes. She has a blue and a brown eye.

As for the rest of the question, Joe did a better job of explaining. Heck, he even had pictures.lol

A hunter? Heck, I was simply taking a nature walk.lol There are few things that we can expect to run into the woods here in Michigan. On a hot summer night with me sweating, excuse the pun, like a pig in a very sight limited corn field the last thing I expected to hear that close to me was an obviously upset pig. Heck, it was quickly clear I couldn't count on the dog for help either. I am surprised he didn't end up in my lap.lol

I do think it was a shame no one was there to see just how quick and graceful I can be.

Larry,

You are REALLY dating yourself! Jane Seymour? WOW. Those pics were when we didn't have color TV much less HDTV. I think your set was messed up. I can't believe we had to get out of the chair to change the channels. LOL

I think we all turn into kids when something is chasing us.

Joe,

If color traits can be linked to ability....then that ought to be easy to figure out for you. Rate each hound past/present on a 1 to 10 scale based upon ability. Then compare that to the color chart and see if there are any correlations. We might need that fellar from that show Numbers to do the math for us though.

Is that chart for only Walkers or all breeds? How could any other breed use it?

The chart applies to all breeds of dogs that show the spotting pattern.

Boxers, collies, great danes are ones that come to mind....
