Bug Dope

We are off to a HORRIBLE mosquitoe season. Nearly biblical rainfall has left ample breeding grounds for those blood sucking pests....

A year of so ago while at a hunt, a fellow loaned me a can of some kind of repellant. I can't remember the name of it, but it was "industrial strenght" stuff that loggers and linesman use while in the "thick stuff" in the south.

What do you use for repellant? What works for you the best. The normal offerings are not seeming to get the job done this year....

I have used....

OFF (Dope) and dryer sheets. You rub the dryer sheets on your skin and it has worked for me!

Eat a clove of garlic every mourning. Keeps the skeeters off. It's what all the bass pro's use so they never get repellant on their lines.

I buy an ear tag from a cattle farmer every summer(well, he actually gives it to me), and place it on my lanyard for my coon squaller. I usually have the scours all summer long, but I have no flies, mosquitos, mites, intestinal worms, or ticks bothering me. LOL

No really, you need to get some of the Deep Woods OFF. You are looking for the cans with the most Deet in them. I usually get some of the power company stuff from some buddies. Only problem is my wife does not like the taste of the Deep Woods. LOL

I was thinking the same thing...

We raise mosquitos around here, and I have found that NOTHING works even adequately. I've tried OFF (might as well rub blood on you), Cutter's, Sportsman's Spray, Oil of Citronella (not recommended for men!!... ), Eucalyptus oil, everything but Garlic (Jim, your single, right? ). Granted, I don't get bit much, but the buzzing in my face is worse than getting bit to me.

On a sidenote, I've read research where anything over about 27% Deet is a waste. They showed no increase in effectiveness over that. I personally am trying Deet alternatives this year.

Best remedy I've found is an ATV at 15 mph...

I've used

I've used the 100% DEET and found it to be real effective especially on the ticks . I was always afraid to use it directly on the skin but I spray it on my boots and clothing and it helps alot in keeping the ticks off. I got a small bottle of it with a pump type sprayer at one of the local Wal-marts. I use it in conjuntion with the Deep Woods Off.

All I have to say is let's hope that the skeeters don't get noses like bass! Imagine spraying yourself with Off, getting some on your fishing line, and a bass being able to smell it in the middle of a billion gallons of water in a large lake! WOW...it's a wonder we ever catch a fish....

I've been doing some research, and DEET is by far the most effective product out there today. The higher concentrations (anything above 30%) are not proven to be "more effective", but may give you an hour's more protection time. Interstingly enough, most of the products out there are rated for short time exposure and are nearly worthless after two hours of setting in a lawn chair...and so it follows that by following dogs and sweating in the process, you need to re-apply about once an hour.

I think I will try the Thermo Cell deal....and just keep re-applying the bug dope!

I seen the Therma Cell punish the bugs around a front porch light one night. Coon hunters bored with a new toy.

Amway D-15 was the best we ever used, but I have no idea if they still make it, or who to buy from around here.

Deep woods Off makes a 1 ounce bottle that is 98% DEET.
It works in the Florida swamps where mosquitos come in clouds.

Muskol is another product that is 99-100% deet. works great also.

Therma Cells work great, but not while you are walking.

I take garlic pills every day starting in May. They do help, but they don't eliminate mosquitos biting ya.

Jim,

I am married! Not sure the misses would appreciate the effects of a whole clove of garlic.lol

It probably would help if ya think about it. Mosquitos mostly cue in on CO2 production. I am sure a whole clove of garlic would change the composition of one's exhaled breath.lol

Therma cells work great after they heat up about 10 minutes! Before that the skeeters will get you once they start to activate they are great! We can get them around here at Walmart now!

The 100% Deet is definitely more effective .. I spray it on every inch of bare skin I got .... you can tell the difference in the woods and when you get home you won't even feel those little " no see-ums" on you .

Put this one to bed , fellas .

Skin-so-Soft from Avon works great, also good for taking road oil off your truck. The wife will think youve been out chasing the ladies when you come in if you don't forewarn her!!!!

does anybody else feel sick after applying deet to skin-?- that is nasty stuff- i use it cause being sick is better than a cloud of bugs carrying you back to their den one piece at a time--wettest may ever here and they are thick -how long does it take for garlic to work-- maybe i should carry some in case of emergency -

Pete....

... yes deet can make some people sick. One of our sons... a boy Scout, who camps and hikes... gets a reaqction to deet. We can't even spray it on IN the house where he can be exposed
