Ended up with a four month old walker pup last summer. She is out of dogs that I know nothing about or are not well known dogs. At about 6-7 mos. old she woud tree on a cage coon. At about 8 mos. old I took her with my Nt.Ch dog. He went real deep for a coon and she went about half way with him, not opening, and then started bawling lost, after about 15 minutes she came back into me. Took her with the same dog as above about 10 times last season, could coax her into treeing some with him, not hard though. She would not go hunting with him, would only hunt out about 100 yrds from me and then would follow me into the tree. When you nocked a coon out she was crazy over it. Could lay a drag and hang it up and get her to tree on it some. She never would progress from this point. Finally about three weeks ago as a last ditch effort before calling it quits I took her to a buddies where she could run loose 24/7. Within three days she was going to the woods by herself, running and treeing. Most of what she is running and treeing is house cats although she is treeing some squirrells and about any other thing that will climb. When I say tree I mean for several hours and hard!! The only other thing is she is starting to run some fast game. What do you think? She is now 14 mos old. Do I put the time in with her or do I give up and put my time in better prospects I have.

bring her back home and kennel her with the other dog so that she bonds with him. give her a few more tries if she starts to hunt with him then start hunting her by herself. break the fast game stuff NOW. One last question do you like this gyp? If you are only half interested in her than don't waste your time she'll never be good enough.

i allways like to give a dog a fare shake at everything. you have put in alot of time allready thats for sure...

my saying would be this i would catch a couple of coons to turn out for her and see how she did .if she done what i thought i liked . then i would move on to the trash breaking and try and get that taken care of before i would run her with any of my other hounds.then see how she does from there on out.you might have to cull or find her a home as a pet.. but i allways try and give a fare shake if i have the time if not i'll give it to someone who does and make sure they no the hole story of it up front.. just my opinion.

Thanks Chad for the response. Thats kinda what I was thinking. She seems to be real intelligent and is a good looking gyp. I've got a couple of just weaned pups out of my own dogs that I have more confidence in and I know how they are bred and what kind of coondogs they will make. I think with some work this female might make a nice tree dog, what kind of coondog is still to early to tell. I just don't know if I want to put the time and effort into a dog that is this slow starting. I want my females for breeding prospects on down the road and I don't think this is a female I would ever want to raise pups out of being slow starting and not knowing about her breeding. I hate to just let a dog that might make it go to waste though because there are so many out there that will never make it!

Thanks for the response treemydog. All thoughts are appreciated. I guess I'm having a hard time making up my mind ! I have just kinda grown attached to the little dog or I would have give up along time ago and put her down. I've never before put up with a dog that won't go hunting this long. I wonder sometimes if she was not ready to go with my male dog yet, he is a super hard going get deep quick type dog, and maybe it's half my fault. Maybe she couldn't keep up that first night and he ran off and left her and she got spooked ?
