I got to.the local butcher, buy kidney fat. Cut into 1" square chunks. Freeze up bagged chunks, thaw as needed. 1 a day. Feed it raw. Feed regular like you used to. Around here, fat sells for $1 a lb.

With a quality feed you shouldn't have to add other things to your food just up the feed a little. I use heated water bowls to make sure they have fresh water all the time. I do soak my food for easy digestion and they absorb more using less energy to do so. Since I soak my food I give them butcher bones every other week to help clean teeth. I will throw scrapes on top of there food every now and again. There are dogs that are hard keepers, they may kennel pace or just burn calories faster than others, they are a different story. I feed Next Level. Kcals is what your going by on your feed. I personally don't like these really high kcal foods. The lazy guys love it. They feed the dog a fraction of the kibble. So way less waste to pick up. Problem is dogs scarf it down cause there barley getting any food. I would rather pick up one more pile of waste and have a dog take its time to eat and digest its food. That's just me.

I feed the same dog food year round. Up it a little in quantity. All my dog houses have thermostatic heaters in them that keeps their houses in the mid 40’s to low 50’s on average.

Which brand heater do you use? I've been looking at them, but would like something that last a few yrs.

Hound Heater Deluxe

I believe I’m in my 7th winter with them. If you decide to buy them, first thing I did was added a sheet metal screw to the small steel hinged cover that is over the thermostat knob. No doubt in my mind that my dogs eventually would have latched onto that and chewed or bent it up! It protects the thermostat knob. I’m on my 7th winter I believe with no issues.

Update: I just looked it up in my files, actually I got them in fall of 2016. Literally no issues.

Thanks, I'm working on building a tornado prof doghouses and would like to have the heaters in hand. I had bought really nice houses for a great price about 15 years ago. Slowly they fell apart, so i know what little changes I want to make if possible. I can't help but look at boxes I see from time to time and think, thats not going to last because of x,y,or z lol.
