I have a Simms hooded rain coat that I bought through Cabela’s. Absolutely the best I’ve owned. They aren’t cheap……..then again I’ve never seen many cheap ones that shed as much water as this one does!

Rain jacket

Definitely buy something made with gore-tex fabric as a liner. Buy a military gore-tex parka coat with hood as they are tuff, I mean tuff. I have many jackets/coats with gore-tex and they ALL work extremely good if you are standing or in a blind. NOTHING works good if you are walking like coon hunting, as you will sweat faster than the coat can wick away the body moisture created by sweating. I have tried the very best and get the same results when walking like coon hunting. I get just about as wet from sweating as I would from the rain, except from being as cold without the rain gear. Gore-tex works on the principle of the pores being to small to let rain or snow in and let the sweat out. This is fine for fishing, standing still, or in a blind, but fails where one is walking to fast to let the sweat evaporate fast enough. I have never owned anything that could keep me dry while climbing mountains or steep ridges following these coon dogs. Beats nothing, but you WILL get wet from sweat if you do any kind of fast walking, no matter how good the rain coat. Dave

Lol. That's funny but true. The concept of rain gear sounds good and is if your activities are limited, standing, sitting, or inactive. Once you start exercising or moving around you start to sweat faster than the rain gear can wick away the sweat causing you to get wet on the inside of the rain coat. Coon hunting is a very active sport and NO kind of rain gear will keep you dry, or at least I have never seen or owned any that would. I own plenty of rain gear that will keep you dry in any kind of weather as long as you are not very active or sweating. Dave

Haha, hard to argue with that! I don’t typically push the issue but every once in a while you wind up in the rain.. most of the times it’s on a cast.

Dave - to your point, I agree nothing is perfect and a poncho will get you wet from the inside. Just curious if anybody had tried much in that middle range. I know there’s a few out there but not sure which one I’m going to try. They’re bound to better than a hoodie when you’re standing there listening for your dog. Cotton doesn’t try very fast lol.

Rain gear

Ryan, look on eBay and look for military gore-tex parka, they are over sized to put on over other clothing, so select your size with that in mind. Military parkas are made extra tough and will last. You can use guest checkout if you do not have a eBay account. You can not beat these parkas for the price, just make sure you get the one with gore-tex. I own many different brands of gore tex coats, parkas and the US military gore tex parkas are the best for protection and durability in my opinion. Dave

I bought several Rivers West rain coats, jackets and loved everyone of them. They stretch and are less likely to tear if caught on anything, but they will tear, They are no different when it comes to sweating you if you are very active like coon hunting. Stationary activities you will love their products as the fabric is almost as quiet as it gets if quietly stalking or other activities requiring little movement. Dave
