Males vs. Females

I know this is completely a matter of opinion but what does everybody prefer hunting? I’ve preferred females in my last years after having a few rough males. But have had more male dogs and probably best ones where males, but.. the other night I was handling a buddies male at a little open event and got to the tree and him and another male where blowing at each other, and I thought then I guess that’s why I’ve grown to like my females but anyway, what do y’all prefer overall? Not just what I’ve been talking about but mouth, drive, or just whatever.

Male/female

The very best dog that I have ever owned or hunted with was a female. Saying that, I have owned more top males than females. I personally do not care what sex if they are a top coon dog. Males definitely have better mouths as a general rule both track and tree mouth. With females heat cycles can be a problem. Dave

I have only had one great female and she would get into any kind of off the wall situations you could think of. (15 ft deep inside a downed hollow tree, 20ft up a blow over leaner tree). You name it she did it. I lost 7 cast in a row because I had to withdraw to get her our of these kind of situations. I never hunted her in a cast again. That being said I've done my fair share of winning with males. I also lost some because my males didn't hold fang pressure. That does get frustrating. Not having to worry about hunting with ruff dogs is why I would rather pack a female. But seems like every time I get one right they come in heat for the hunt I want to put them in.

I prefer females for a few different reasons. But from what I've seen the females mature faster mentally than males on average. If you're into raising a few pups then its more beneficial for you to have a female over male. If you have a female then you could breed to any stud dog in the country but not so for vice versa.

male or female

in all my yeas of hunting,i perfer hunting a female, seems to me a female matures a little faster than a male they seem to want to please the owner more.i have had males they are mostly more hard headed, more aggresive at times, most mature a little latter in age.but i hunt with alot of people they will only hunt a male, cuz the female comes in heat.i will say this most all the females i had they all except for 1 had an above average mouth for a female.just my opion
