Not paying a dog up

Why is it that everyone asks for a performance pup or a Super Stakes eligible pup…..but then rarely pays them up in the programs when they get them? It is so much cheaper when they’re young. I see so many young dogs for sale that are still on puppy papers. Breeders spend a lot of money to have these pups eligible, at the least the buyer should pay them up. Then if they want to sell them later, they are eligible.

Buyers are not required to paym up.....
Paying up pups that turn out as dudds
is a waste of $. That would b my guess as to y not paid up.
Just because a pup is eligible doesn't guarantee squat.
JMO.

It is a mystery to me. And why do they buy quality pups that they never intend to give a chance?

I know they aren’t required. There are a couple posts on here about why the performance point value is low….this is a major contributor.

Why wait and pay extra money if they do turn out, isn’t that wasting even more money.

I totally agree….the first question I get is, are they performance or SS? We’ve had some good ones, in fact we had the Friday night 4th place registered dog at Autumn Oaks. Thankfully he is paid up.

Maybe I’ll just start permanently registering all of them and charge more for the pups. That way I know they’re eligible

Any I whelp myself I pay the entire litter up in performance and pay the extra $25 a pup for SS so if we buy one back it's cheaper to pay it up. It cost alot more to register my litters but I've found that the pups do sell for more $ this way.
Seems many don't even think about registering until they get ready to put it in hunts. For most that will be beyond the 1 year deadline for performance and the SS is costly enough they won't do it. Also, that little extra sheet for performance has been lost. This is a long running program that many still don't understand. I've asked in the past why they can't have a box to check on puppy papers for those that are eligible but UKC's system isn't set up for it. On litters in the past before I just started permanently paying up I would staple the form and fill out all information I could on it (sire, dam, their # and puppy #). This did help. Highlighting the proper area on the other papers appropriate fees and age helped too.
I have guys call me all the time to help them with their paperwork. To people who don't do it all the time the extra to pay up these pups can be confusing or overwhelming.

Plus if they knew that, paying the pup up, you sell the pup for what ever reason you can get a better price on the pup. But I do believe it’s a little complicated if you don’t do it all the time. I think breeders should make a point when a buyer pulls up and gets their pup, they should just go over it before they leave. Just for curiosity.

You’re right Chris. I’m down to only raising a couple litters a year now, so it wouldn’t be too bad. I just hate seeing those dogs come up for sale at 18 months old still on puppy papers.

I have never paid up performance. I wouldn’t even know how, there is no options on the puppy papers that I can think of. I always pay up the superstakes and do the dna profile but it is pretty straightforward how to do it on the papers. Ukc could definitely use some clarification in this area.

There's some good informative information mentioned here.
I personally raise a few litters and buy some pups from time to time.
I hate the programs. I feel there a waste of money. Performance doesn't pay enough especially considering the amount of pups that actually turn out.
SS for most is not something the majority have any plans of doing. Once again the amount of pups that turn out good enough is few and far between.
It's gambling with money that the majority of the hunters aren't interested in chasing and have better uses for.
For the few hunters that do purchase dogs for the purpose of going to the SS I understand your frustration. For those who train them pups I also understand not paying them up cause it gets costly when they don't turn out.
It's kinda like the lottery. Neither have good odds.
