How to recover a pup that has “blown” up.

I never dealt with one blowing up. Female Was a year old in July. November looked like the dog every man hopes for treed over 50 coons until January 12 then she had pneumothorax and she was not able to hunt til Friday. Last 2 out of 3 nights, slick treed, left trees after 2-3 minutes treeing, treed a possum (that’s a first) just crazy. Any advice I would appreciate it.

Keep hunting her. Don't get too carried away if you shock her for off game. If you don't shock her that wont hurt anything. Here where I live is 1 of the toughest places to tree coon and it the toughest time of the year. If this was her first time out you wouldn't be too disappointed so just hunt her like you're starting over and be patient with her.

Personally continuing to watch her struggle is the last thing I'd do esp at that age. I'd wait for better conditions if they're tough right now or intentionally set her up to succeed at least til I got a handle on where she's at between her ears. I know it's not popular these days but if I had put her with another dog couple nights til she turned the corner I would if she's the type thst would even benefit from that. Doin stuff wrong can become a habit real fast.

Did they put your dog on steroids? I have a nice hound that it messed up for about two months. He went from being extremely accurate to where he couldn’t even hardly run a track.

Yes Tom and then I gave her drugs for 10 days I am ashamed to say I don’t even know what the drugs were. But that’s exactly what she doing went from very accurate to hardly knowing how to tree. Last night she averaged over 8.0 mph inside a 1000 yards but covered 6.5 miles inside that 1000 yards looked like a kid scribbling all over the woods just crazy. I am ready to put her up a another month and wait it out til better conditions.

Pneumothorax, that is a collapsed lung! Did your vet extract the air in the cavity outside the lung? It causes shortness of breath and crest pain. Did she have a traumatic injury that caused it? Has your vet given you the all clear that she is good to do the extreme exercise that hunting is?
