Dog with Tear Duct Issues

Have any of you all had a hound that needed surgery because of eye tear duct swelling up ? My dogs eye looks terrible after running in a bean field tonight , I flushed it with eye wash but it’s concerning .

Dogs have 3 eyelids instead of 2 like humans. Probably what you are seeing is inflammation of the 3rd eyelid located in the inner corner of the eye. Quite possibly some sort of debris has gotten between the 3rd eyelid and the eye. It can cause severe irritation and irregular tear production along with swelling of this eyelid. You can try to flush it yourself. A water hose with the water on low and continual rinse or a bottle of saline can do the trick. I have also used a q-tip coated in Vaseline to remove seeds and debris. Most farm stores sell ophthalmic ointment (terramycin) that will treat eye infections and help with the pain and inflammation. You can also find eye wash for dogs there or use water or regular saline as a rinse as mentioned above. Eyedrops can help with the irritation. The the eye could also be scratched and the 3rd eyelid is inflamed as a result of trauma. Treatment would be the same.
Or you can go to the vet for them to examine, clean and treat with drops and antibiotic ointment.
Unless and object has became lodged your dog should not require surgery.

Thanks for the info . I flushed it pretty good I’ll keep doing it till it gets better . I didn’t see anything lodged in her eye but I have heard of that surgery. Hopefully she don’t need it .

Believe it or not just take a finger full of vaseline and place it directly on her eyeball and bu nightfall you will never know it was inflamed. Done it many times after beanfield races
