Dog food side effects

This topic needs to be public for all dog owners but has to be addressed carefully to avoid being deleted. I've recently found that some of the higher priced, premium feeds are responsible for hormonal and behavior issues in one of my dogs. She looked great on this feed, minimal stool and she appeared to like eating it. On the flip side, her behavior became strange. She acted nervous, stressed, moody, her mouth was different in the woods and her performance dropped immediately. Someone mentioned this could be a side effect to synthetic iodine that's often used in feed causing a hormone problem. I put her on a food that has corn as the 3rd ingredient and half the price, within a week or two she's back to normal. I don't think this is a coincidence. Who else can relate to this?

I had a similar experience last year. When cool weather came (and more frequent hunting) I thought it would be a good idea to feed high-protein dog food. My dog was useless. She would trail all night, backtrack, go back to where she struck, and start over. Didn't tree one coon in three weeks. I went back to my original dog food and she went back to treeing coons. I don't know if was the extra protein or some other ingredient, but it affected her adversely. I read on here a lot, sometimes all they need is a change of address. Maybe it's a change of dog food.

I have read about the iodine issues…other things to consider on the high protein dog foods are the meds given to sick animals which includes the euthanasia meds before death…some of these animals are used to get the protein levels up in the premium dog foods…
I cannot say it is fact but have read articles about it…

I too have had females not come in heat until I switched to the cheaper corn based dog food…

Also have had dogs get severely ill over time with a certain dog food I had used for years…swapped dog foods and within 2 weeks all my dogs were doing way better…

I also had issues with grain free. Looked great, for a little while. Then extra food to maintain weight, shortened heat cycles only lasting a few days. I researched what I could, found a synthetic iodine in most of the food. I switched to food with corn, not the first ingredient, as that is supposed yo be up to 40% of the food. But second with meat being first.
As far as the euthanasia drug, yes. There is no law that states 'meat meal' cannot be euthanized dog and cats. And venison. Can be road kill.
When I switched, first heat cycle was 3 times longer. Next time, they were normal. When I originally brought some attention to this, several laughed.
I stand by this. We never had this problem 30 years ago. Whoever heard of a thyroid dog in the 70's?

Food

What dog food did you switch to? I literally just switched feed last week thinking maybe that’s why she didn’t cycle last year or this year.

iodine

My vet told me that alot of the foods have sea salt now, instead of regular salt so the dogs are not getting the iodine they need. He said I should us iodize salt in their food . Is this why the synthetic iodine is used.

Fish meal, salt, kelp, seaweed, eggs, calcium iodate, all are high in iodine. Remember, too much is worse than not enough. Potassium iodide... look it up and what it is used for....
Look up too much iodine causes hypothyroidism... "thyroid dog"...when it's chemical.. who knows how much a dog will absorb

Mike, I'm now feeding the black bag 24/20 showtime performance feed. I'm also adding a little bit inodized salt in hopes that she'll start to cycle. She's 2 years old now without a visible heat cycle.

As far as the euthanasia drug, yes. There is no law that states 'meat meal' cannot be euthanized dog and cats. And venison. Can be road kill.
When I switched, first heat cycle was 3 times longer. Next time, they were normal. When I originally brought some attention to this, several laughed.

At the very worst I had a dog with ear infections…looked like a severe case of ear mites…I have a 100 percent cure recipe for ear mites and it didn’t work when I used it…most of the dogs had dry skin with dandruff…fed extra to maintain weight…several dogs had fatty tumors at the point of their hams…the female didn’t come in heat…it was the same dog food I fed for years…I swapped and things got better quickly…the fatty tumors went away and the only thing left of them was the scars…
You are right about the 1970s and 1980s…

Animals used for feed are not euthanized with a lethal injection. It is highly illegal. If they are euthanized with a lethal injection the meat is contaminated and can not be used. Slaughter houses don't even have access to them.

Phytoestrogens.

Those are present in a lot of the higher end dog foods that claim to be corn free, meat first ingredient etc.

Look on the labels for any soy product, legumes such as peas as well as flax seed.

I've had several breeders in my other breed that had issues when feeding foods high in those optional grains. Odd cycles, temperament issues etc. They removed all of the legumes and flax from their diets and the dogs returned to normal heat cycles and temperaments settled back to normal.

Legumes in feed have been connected by several breeders to effect fertility and cycles in females. I’ve never saw a official study done but I have talked to different breeders that have found it as a connection.

Just an update, the combination of feed change and adding iodinized salt, my female is in her first cycle. I should have done this sooner!

Cycled
