Do you comp hunters cull and start over??

I’m not talking selling, trading or giving away.

I know there is only one cast winner per cast but if “you” have -25 to -200 at the end of the hunt, you have got to know you are just donating?

Every dog has a bad night and every handler has a bad night. But I don't think 💬 old timer is talking about a bad night, I think he's talking about consistently coming back with -50 to -250 and no plus. I think it is safe to say every hunter and dog has had bad nights. The only thing more aggravating than your dog standing on it's head than YOU standing on your head a making bad calls.

I have seen some sure enough counterfeit dogs and see people constantly making excuses for them. Though I do like hunting with those guys (makes my mut look so much better)

Because if it can do it “regularly” then it should do it on a Friday or Saturday night-Shouldn’t it?? Maybe not be the cast winner BUT not come in with a minus score.

And Ringtail is correct—if you comp hunt and have a minus score one night that’s hunting BUT you hunt 3 comp hunts and come in with minus 3 straight nights?? I think you are wasting dog food, gas and entry fees.

Whether it's a competition hunt, a pleasure hunt or a training session. Whatever you call it. You have to evaluate your dog and be honest about it. The higher a man's standards. The better understanding of getting the most out of your hound. Generally the better your hound will perform. But everyone has one of those nights. Just dont want too many in a row. Unfortunately I have found Coonhunting for fun with a well trained hound is boring. It's the same thing every time. You cut the dog loose, hear it trail or run a coon. Then he calls you to the thickest swamp around to come get it. I kind of like the excitement of is your dog going to improve tonight. Did he learn what you tried to correct him on the last time out. If your strictly comp hunting. You had better be looking to win 70% of the time 60% minimum in stiff competition with a dog that you find the coon 80% of the time with. My cull and todays sell it to someone else's type of culling is different.

Not sure about the “boring” statement? When I take a puppy out of the whelping box at 6-8 weeks and let it investigate the different smells on the lawn and garden to the walks in the woods at 3-6 months to the nights in the woods from 9 months on, I myself like “boring”. I want the hound to use it’s brain to find the track, work that track and end under a tree with a raccoon in it.(and I even like a higher percent then 80). To me the training is the excitement and the finish trained hound is satisfaction.

Little like the game Monday night, I’m sure the time spend on the court as grade schoolers, then high school to the win over North Carolina which was what they trained for, I wouldn’t call that boring👍

Pleasure hunting with a "finished" hound is boring. Competition hunting with a finished hound is never boring. How many hunters keep on pleasure hunting a finished hound and how many go out and get a young one and start over? Some people are hunters and some are trainers.
Some take their young hounds to competition hunts at a very young age before they are ready to win. They don't go to win, they just go to compete. If you have 300-, then 200- then 100-, you are making progress and learning. Why cull a dog that is getting better.
Some hunt their dog by itself and train on their dog for a couple of weeks and then take it to a comp hunt to see if they have made any progress. They don't expect to win. When they start winning, it is time to get another dog.

Old Timer. I love watching the training. But when are finished and do it right. I personally get a little bored. I find that more in my later years because I usually hunt by myself and I know where they are going to call me to. Isn't going to be an easy walk.

I have been on quite a few hunts over the years. I seen dog fights and handlers get in each other’s faces. I have seen a judge want to scratch my hound because she would not hunt with others running junk and was told by the judge if his dog was running junk he would shoot it. With in 5 minutes a deer runs by us and as I shine the deer and his Walker behind it, I just said “wish I had a gun!” Maybe you remember the guy who’s hound had a coon treed and the judge “could not” see it so he went back to the truck and dropped it by his feet?? SSDD. Then the one where this Big Time Breed sat on a stump and would not help shine the tree. Oh, don’t get me wrong, I’ve been on one that was fun, but like my culling program, they have got to be a higher percentage for me to keep my interest.

Now as far as culls, I can only answer what this pleasure hunter does. I don’t hunt a pack. I run one or two at a time on coon and “maybe” up to 3 on coyotes. If they don’t please me, there’s a Vet within 10 miles that will “take them to the train station” and I have a shovel in the shed.

And your last question, I buy pups from hounds that have brains, nose, voice and looks. NEVER will I or have I bought one because of Titles. Example was Zach, I seen his sire and grand sire also seen his dam. Had a very closed friend that hunted the top side and was impressed. Also checked out the dams style and was happy. So with the leg work I did I had hopes that the trip and money would be worth it and it was. BUT there have been times that the best intentions have had me using the shovel.

I knew an older gentleman who would enter the 20 or 25 dollar hunts just for the companionship. Never had a chance of winning but he would come and donate.

I did that for my first 5 years of hunting but they were $15 and $25 hunts. Everyone told me that was how you learn. I guess that I was a slow learner.

How often have you seen the change from a super nice guy at the club house drinking coffee and then when that light comes on that cap they turn into the biggest butts to walk a woods??

I guess when I want companionship, I go and visit my friend in the nursing home or take the grandkids hunting. That $50 can buy a lot of ice cream and great memories.

I love your post, me and you want the same kind of dog. I competition hunted for years and have pleasure hunted for over 60 years. I look for the same type of dog in both competition and pleasure hunting. I enjoy the fully trained hound that shows me coons every night, accuracy is a must for me regardless of what type hunting I do. These mountains are to steep and rough to follow a slick freeing dog. I will not hunt a dog that is not accurate period. I had my share of good competition hunts, but did have some bad hunts with awful sportsmanship than anyone would want. Some folks just want to cheat with a poor dog rather than accept their dog is not very good. Not me, I won't hunt a dog that does not perform to my expectations period. Davr

is out of Hoyle Creek Screamer and Hoyle Creeks Red Ruby, not Robbie's Zack, although I did hunt with him. And without a doubt Robbie and Terry Hayes always came with a hound that can/could tree raccoon. Had a nice hunt with Terry and his Ralph hound and that's why I fed one with that blood.

The reason those two lines work at times was because of the family breeding. Rusty Red came from Larry Turpin and had Hayes breeding on his bottom side and Go Man Sam was his sire. Sam was also hunted up here in WI by Tom Solberg and is the grandsire of T- Top Rat and we all know how the T-top hounds do. I believe (jmo) that the blood in the veins is way more important then the Titles in front of the name.

PS: and next time you copy and paste, please do not add your comments in what I posted. I'm sure you wouldn't want your hound to cover mine?
