Because of the shortages in parts last year. Yes, Garmin has done away with combos as we know them. Which is a handheld and collar packed together in one box with the accessories. What they are doing is shipping the handhelds in one box and the collars in another box. Many dealers realize that most want a combo so they sell them to you still using the word combo, but they will come in two different boxes. Basically a change in packaging.
The life of the ALPHA 100 like all the products in the past. Starts to get discussed after a model or two come out newer. People start to questions when it will be discontinued and a lot of that becomes the rumors and what people believe. I can say that yes most definitely one day the ALPHA 100 will be discontinued. We had extreme shortages of that product late last year and many thought they were going away then. However I feel the handhelds will start appearing again as handhelds only and if you want a combo you purchase the collar separate at the same time. But the fact is. Sometime in the future it will go away. I just don't think anyone knows when but many are speculating on time frames.
One thing that has gotten confusing is the words COMBO or BUNDLE when discussing these products. On just what that definition is. A handheld is a handheld and a collar is a collar. Pretty simple there. Then Garmin had their Combos which was one handheld and one collar. Now here is where it gets confusing somewhat. Garmin has it's rules and regulations on selling this product and how it is sold and handled. Many dealers read the fine print of the rules and to give the customer the best value. They put together a BUNDLE Package. That is the Handheld and Collar and offered some accessories with discounts on the accessories. There are limits to the discounts allowed but in reality there are many accessories one ends up buying. If a person understands this they can find a dealer that offers bundle packages and save on bundling accessories at the time of the original purchase. However do to the shortage of product last year. Many of the bundle and save packages were not available. Reason was, many dealers were just fortunate to get collars or handhelds to sell. I feel in the spring of this year, that may change for the better. The Bundle and Save packages will return and things will be somewhat normal. Just make yourself an educated customer and find your best deal with a dealer that will stand behind what they sell.
