Picking a pup how to/old wise tales

Wonder what makes you pick the pup you do weather it be looks, how it acts, or by something you have learned from someone over the years. Like everyone knows about if them roof of the mouth is black has to be good.
Was just curious.

Many have said close your eyes and pick a pup…
I like choosing a pup that is laid back and calm yet intense…when he plays with it’s siblings he plays hard…but this pup goes off alone checking things out…we can observe much more if we raise our own litters…

Happiness happens when;

The coat length, type and color are what I like…
The pup is built very well with proper ear set and length…
The pups is not shy and it acts right…
The pup is of the right size and type…
I like a female to weigh 55-58…
I like a male to weigh 65 to 68…

There is a lot more to observe when we breed our own…
Time is very limited when going out and buying a pup…
Buy at least two pups…the chances of having a good pup that grows into a keeper doubles…

.

AKE I am sure your going to get some good responses on how to pick that pup. That special pup we are all looking for. Let me back up one step. I think who you get that pup from is what starts the wheels of success turning on your journey of raising and training a pup.

Does it really matter—

You and YOUR pup is what really matters so maybe if you are going to the litter, let the pup PICK you.

If it isn’t comfortable with you, it can have one nail in the coffin from the start.

Color of the roof of the mouth, color of the coat, biggest or smallest or fastest or slowest out of the nest never will be as important as are YOU a trainer?

I have seen a guy take an outstanding hound and get him so he wouldn’t hunt at all and I have seen a guy take one that was given up on and make it an outstanding hound.

The best advice I ever got was from Red Blakesley when I went to pick up my pup and he had 3 litters and 20 some puppies and I asked which one should I pick and he said, “they’re all bred to make coonhounds, it’s up to you.”

Good luck and have fun.

Picking the right family of dogs to buy a pup from is probably the most important thing to try and do when choosing a pup…once that’s done choose what you like…when you really like your hunting dog you will do better when hunting and so will your dog…

Check out this podcast about a man that has breeding his line before most were born. Thing has had these dogs for 16 generations. I think you will enjoy it.
