What age to spay?

I am new to the coonhound world. I have two female redbones. They are just over 5 months old. Since I do not have any plans to breed them, I think I will just have them spayed. I just want to enjoy them and hunt them with my kids. I have been doing a lot of research on when to spay them, but can only seem to find Bob Barker robots saying the sooner is better. What is your opinion? Thanks

After they are full grown. Probably 18 months old or so.

My vet said it is best to spay them after full grown and after a minimum of 2 heat cycles.

I appreciate everyone's response. Looks like I have time to think about whether to do it or not. This information is much better than anything I could find doing a google search.

A quick science-based overview of what we know today:

Early dog neutering doubles the chance of hip dysplasia (1)
Early dog neutering increases joint disorders in dogs by four times (2)
Neutering dogs triples the risk of several joint problems in GSDs (3)
Neutering decreases longevity in Rottweilers (4)
Neutering increases the chance of cancer in dogs (5)
With this new research and more on the horizon, veterinarians and scientists are beginning to reconsider their stance on neutering and spaying dogs.

Is this the same for males and females?

You are right about that…

.gov is supposed to be right but not sure about that anymore…

I read quite a bit about spay and neuter…the majority says you should and those are the animal rights activists and their bull hockey talking lies…

I copied what I thought was true if not just logical…

I went hog hunting today and it reminded me of this thread…he has a female that isn’t be best hog dog on account she is not a good strike dog…but when she gets on a hog or hot track she is very fast and is good about stopping one…

Since he wasn’t going to breed her he had her spayed…she is unhealthy fat now…still does he job a
but not like before…
My wife had her indoor dog spayed and we put her on a low calorie dog food…

My hunting dogs will be intact…
