Highest score

What’s been the highest score everyone has scored in a hunt?

My highest score was 950 and got beat by 25

Is this—

A 3 hour hunt or 1 hour hunt?

Hunting Judge or Non Hunting Judge?

Owners handling their own hound or Hired Pro Handlers?

Hard to grasp that kind of score by one dog, that's a minimum of 11 coons getting 225 for each coon, going to 11 trees in a 120 minute hunt and waiting the time and shining the tree, that a tree every 10 plus minutes counting strike time tree time and shine time it's just hard to believe. That's not counting for any other trees that another dog might tree. This is stats for one dog, could it be done? Possible, but I would have to see it to believe it. Dave

In Canada it wasn't uncommon at all for a cast winner to have 2000+ or more. I've never hunted up there but the coons are big and slow-moving so they get treed fast and are easy to find.

If I remember correctly the highest score in a 2 hour UKC hunt here is the states is right around 2600+. It was at a Black and Tan sectional in northern Ohio back in the late 90s.

I don't know about that hunt in particular, but racking up a big score is easy if a few things fall into line.

1. Your dog has to be a first and first dog.
2. They can't run a mile before putting their head down. Tree the close ones.
3. Get down to a 2-dog cast as soon as possible. You can't score a big score by yourself, you'll burn up the clock waiting the 5 (now 3) on each tree.
4. Dog 2 in the cast has to be a me-to follower, but not good at it. He can't accidentally get first strike or tree at any time. He also can't get treed by himself or it'll mess up your high score by wasting scorecard time.
5. Find the coon as quick as possible. Big northern coons when leaves are off are great for this. They basically look like a bear cub in the tree.
6. Re-cut or call time out as soon as the tree is scored. Make sure you conserve every minute of hunt time. Patch hunting is perfect because you know you're moving as soon as the tree is scored so timeout can be called.

It is hard to imagine if you spend your life hunting down south, but the coon population in some places is just unreal. We were hunting in central Michigan one night and a couple guys from East Tennessee were with us. Around one 10-acre hay field we counted 17 sitting up! The guys from TN had never seen that many on any given night, let alone in that close of proximity to one another. That was just one drop we made, but there were coons everywhere like that. If you're in a place like that, and you get the right breaks, a legitimate high score isn't out of reach at all.

Paul, I have hunted in thick coons before several times in Indiania, Michigan, and other coon zoos and I still say it is near impossible to rack up a 2400 score in a 2 hour hunt. That is a minimum of 11 coons scored and an average of less than 11 minutes per coon. That's striking, treeing and scoring each coon in less than 11 minutes, the math does not lie. Dave

This is my highest, it was out of the Michigan zone this year. Awesome places to hunt and my female was in her groove.

Jeremy, that's a respectful score and one that's hard to beat, 1225 is a great score . You have hunted in many hunts in thick coons with some darn good dogs and never scored close to 2400 in a hunt. That tells me that it's highly unlikely anyone could score 2400 plus points in a 2 hour hunt. It would be something I would pay to see, heck, I would even pay to see that in a pleasure hunt keeping score just like a competition hunt. 11 scored singles in 2 hours by one dog, yelp I would pay to see that. Dave. P.S. I am not calling anyone a liar, just saying the math and 50 plus years coon hunting and I have never witnessed such a feat of scoring 11 plus coons in 2 hours, even though I have treed more than that just not in 11 separate trees. If anyone has a dog that can tree 11 singles that we see in a 2 hour hunt, please contact me, I will pay to see this happen. Dave

Lol. That makes 2 of us, I would like to see myself. I think most folks just do not understand the math involved with scoring that many points in a 2 hour hunt. Math does not lie, you have 120 minutes in 2 hours a 2400 score a dog would have to tree a coon on average of less than 11 minutes, to be exact that's a little over 10 minutes and 54 seconds. That's striking, trailing and treeing a coon, walking to the tree, shining the tree, finding the coon ALL 11 times at minimum getting 225 per coon on at least 10 coons and 150 on 1 coon (average). What are the odds on that happening, one to be able to score a coon Every 10 minutes and 54 seconds and to find EVERYONE of the coons in a short time or to even be able to find all 11 coons period. If you add anymore trees to the equation, you have even less time than 10 minutes and 54 seconds per tree. I have treed coons in flat ground just about as fast as you possible could and NEVER even come close to an average of under 11 minutes between coons going to tree, finding coon and recutting to tree another coon. Yes, I have seen coons sitting up everywhere around those big cornfields, but how many do the dogs actually tree? Even a top layup dog would need more than 11 minutes in my opinion. Dave

Dave I think your absolutely right only way I could see it being done if they only spent about 5 to 8 minutes a drop in my opinion. That would be cutting the dogs loose and they strike and tree about 50 yards in front of the cast. That’s the only way I could see it happening

Believe it or not it is up to you, I’m not sure of the score but it was over 2000+ maybe 2200+ on Friday and 2225+ on Saturday, I wasn’t on either cast so All I know is it happen and the score stood for high score on Friday night but got beat Saturday night by 25. All cast members said it happened and the score was accepted.

Tim Osborne, I am sceptical of the score, not the messenger. You are only reporting information as it was. Personally, I am very sceptical of these high scores where the math makes it almost impossible. Not impossible, but HARD to believe as a coon hunter with over 50 years if experience. Dave

You must be the guy I read about that went golfing alone and shot holes in one on 18 consecutive holes.

Tim Osborne, I am sceptical of the score, not the messenger. You are only reporting information as it was. Personally, I am very sceptical of these high scores where the math makes it almost impossible. Not impossible, but HARD to believe as a coon hunter with over 50 years if experience. Dave

I respect that, it put a bad taste in a lot of peoples mouth, like I said I wasn’t on either cast, it was questioned but at the end of the day it was accepted, I have my thoughts about it.

All cast members said it happened and the score was accepted.

I’m the same way as Dave. I’m not calling anyone a liar by no means because I wasn’t on the casts either but I’m wondering about the scores
