Score This

3 dog cast dog A struck for 100 dog B struck 75 dog C struck for 50. Dog A treed for 125 dog B treed for 75 and dog C treed for 50.

We get to sight of the tree and dog A is split form B and C about 10 yards. Before cast gets all way to the tree Dog A pulls to dogs B and C. Dog A is minus for leaving his tree and dogs B and C move up on tree score because split tree. Tree is dead when cast arrives. Tree is scored slick how do you score dog A being that cast hadn’t handled dogs but was within about 10 yards of tree. Did cast arrive to tree before dog A or was dog A treeing but not declared treed before cast arrived?

Dog A takes next available tree points which is 25 he's minused both ways on a slick. so now Dog A is at -250.
Until I tell the cast to handle the dogs at a tree we have not arrived yet. sometimes you can see dogs on a tree from 40 yards but you haven't arrived to the tree yet.

The first and only real question is wether or not the trees were considered one tree or two. If it was one tree (definitely connected) the dog A did not leave the tree. If it was two trees then Jack is correct.

At the point the dog left his tree he's minused no matter what you can't determine if trees are one until after dogs are handled until that point dogs are accountable for points until they are handled.

Thanks Jack

I try stay up on rules but there will always be judgement calls or things to learn. The thing that I was unsure on was by what definition (cast is at the tree fell under) and your explanation of cast hasn’t arrived until dogs is handled make sense.

I don't agree. I believe the rule was written to punish the dog that was treeing on the slick, but the handler knew enough not to tree his dog on it. If I am that close and see the dog move I wouldn't minus the dog on the slick because he came in or moved after we could obviously see that wasn't where he was treed.
If the situation was reversed and the dog was treed on the tree, but the cast saw him coming into the tree as they arrive, before you said handle them, you wouldn't say the dog was at the tree.

It is truly a judgement call. There is no black and white definition of "arrive at the tree". Everyone has to use their own "common sense" as Mr Gingrich calls it. Is "arriving" when you handle the dogs, when you see the dogs, when you get 10 feet from the dogs, when you get 20 feet from the dogs?

Why would you minus a dog for leaving one tree and going to another one that close until after dogs were handled and it was determined trees were separate?

We handled the dogs then decide if we score trees as one or separate.

So you handled the dogs, decided the trees did not touch and then minused Dog A for leaving its tree?

Some might say that if you saw Dog A leave its tree and move over to the other tree, you had "arrived at the tree". As I said it is a judgement call and everyone has their own judgement.
