Not saying that what we did was right but 50 years ago our pups were so gamey that we would hold them at the truck till the old dogs struck a coon and then send them to the old dogs hoping they got there before they found something else to run. We didn't have a correction collar so the only way to break the young dog was to run him down and that got old. Now with wanting dogs to be so independent I guess this would be the very wrong thing to do. Did any of you ever do this. Funny thing is the good ones seem to come to the top anyway.

I have done the same thing and I think the independent thing is overrated anyway.

Tom we did it thst way too after we learned the hard way. Those trashy buggers that wouldn't pack into the old dog usually ruined your night. And maybe a couple days beyond that night when we didn't even have tracking collars.

That kind of training brings back some memories. You would have to go to the highest hill to listen for the dogs when they got out of hearing, to see if they were treed or running off game. Things sure have changed.

I remember wishing if i only had the money to buy a 4 volt wheat lite.Finally got one and used it 10 years.Like using a candle compared to lights today.Still found the coons tho.Breaking hounds off deer was tuff.

Ahh yes the good old days... I remember charging those old wheat lights and adding water to them... I also remember when I ordered a 6 volt light from Nightlight...man that thing was bright... it would be like trying to find a coon with a bic lighter compared to the stuff we have today... 🤣

I just don't understand why anyone would whip a dog for treeing with another dog. I thought we were breeding tree dogs not get gone by yourself. If you lived where I do and you done that it wouldn't take long for you to stop that. I tried 3 females this week and if they treed and another dog came to them they would leave and go get treed somewhere else. In my booked I just burn't you and your dog treed the coon so just keep on beating them. When mine trees I don't worry they are going to leave when yours get there.
