Sick dog! Thoughts on what could be

Got a heck of a young dog who is 10 ply, we twisted a bears tail for bout 4.5 hors Saturday with him and a few more. Got home fed and watered and he ate and drank good. Sunday stopped eating and was peeing pure blood... I mean looked like iodine! Slobbering, vomiting and running fever. So loaded up and paid the 210$ er fee. Tested for everything under sun, white blood count up signaling infection, protein in urine tested positive for lymes of course. So kept him all night started on 2 different antibiotics and fluid flush. Talked to vet bout hour ago no changes other than fever slightly lower. Urine still looks like iodine still nauseous and vomiting. Vet says keeping again tonight and keep the same treatment going. If no change tomorrow don't know what road we can go down...talking about referrals to specialists which sounds like big money. Any ideas on what this could be or something that they can test for?? Any ideas guys would be appreciated! Can't figure out why the vet would just give up and not do some research either

Might see if the Vet checked for muscle break down…in humans it’s CK. Sounds sort of like rhabdomyolysis. Rapid muscle break down from strenuous exertion. Also needs to check Potassium and kidneys.

Sounds like a kidney issue to me. Can be caused by something toxic he ate but also by an injury, severe kidney infection or even kidney stones.

Mr Coffman

1st off any relation to Johnny in TN? Is there a test for what you are describing or just a vets diagnosis?

No relation.

Just ask if he tested for muscle breakdown. In humans we test for CK (creatine kinase). If it’s really high, that would be the main way of diagnosing rhabdomyolysis. Really high CK as a a result of rhabdo, will also effect Kidneys and usually potassium as well.

UPDATE!!!

Ok folks it was Rhabdomyolysis! The vet done a CK test and the normal reading in dogs is 200-250 and Major's was 2180...10x's the normal reading. Absolutely ran so hard destroyed his muscle tissue. He will make a full recovery and don't think he suffered any lasting kidney damage, his Urine as of this evening has returned almost to normal just a slightly o red orange tint. He's eating fair now at home and drinking A LOT! Which is needed to flush Kidneys. He did also test positive for Lymes. How I dont understand as much as spend on flea and Tick treatment, but anyway after 4 days He's home and right here beside me. His treatment consisted of 4 days of fluids and 2 different antibiotics and now home a months supply of the 2 different antibiotics twice a day, keep him cool and hydrated. Let's all pray the wife and daughter don't turn him into a big ol pretty HOUSE DOG! Doc says in bout 30 days to cure Lymes we can head back to the woods. Thanks to all who was concerned and to the fella who told me about this MANY MANY THANKS! A DOG WHO WILL RUN THAT HARD IS TRULY A PLEASURE TO OWN AND PRIVILEGE.
Thanks MR COFFMAN

Dog

Thanks for the report on your dog. Glad to see they figured it out and that he is on his way to recovery. For those who make comments saying this Foum is dead, this post shows exactly the opposite. This Forum is for exactly this type of Post where someone reaches out to the coon hunting community for information or help in figuring out a situation. Wes Coffman was spot on with his thoughts and led Mr. Richards to find a solution to his dogs problem. No, this Forum is NOT DEAD by a long shot and NO it's not an extension of Facebook, nor should it be.While some may not like the peace and quiet this Forum is all about these day, Most of us definitely enjoy being able to have peaceful exchanges on everything dog hunting related without the trouble makers stirring up trouble every day. It's definitely refreshing to see folks actually helping each other on this Forum and if this makes a few folks think this Forum is dead, then so be it, they can peruse Facebook to get their kicks. Dave

Well said

Thanks Dave I'm grateful for this forum if not for Mr Coffman I don't think the vet would have checked this till I pushed for it. I wish more folks would look at these post and reply with something to them. Now I know the problem they are much easier to treat. I hope I can help someone if needed in the future as I was but let's hope everyone and their dogs stay healthy and I don't have too! Good luck all and by the way I check this forum daily 👍

Thanks Mr. Richards, I agree 100 percent with you and a big Thank you to Wes Coffman with his help on your dogs condition. Some things happen that a certain Vet may not have seen before, but thanks to a Forum like this one, we have lots of folks that have experienced many different things. With this much experience available it's much easier to come up with the right answers to many different problems or issues we encounter. A prime example of what this Forum is for. A prime example of the total sum being much greater than the individual parts. Happy hunting. Dave

You deserved the kind compliments, your help was spot on and thanks to you, the vet could make the proper call on how to treat. The problem was something that I had never heard of and I suspect most folks haven't heard of this. I am so thankful that we have this Forum and folks like you that do not hesitate to help when they can. Dave

Thanks again guys, Dave is right we can all learn something from each other in situations like this. Saved me time and money and most of all was able to get a positive diagnosis and the correct treatment helped to a speedy recovery! I'd be lost without this young dog cause he's a good un! He's eating and drinking good meds are doing what they are supposed to. Today he was out jumping around so let him out and he ran around the yard for a while and is acting normal.
